Transmission Question

Recently my car got stuck in the snow. I tried getting it out by rocking the car (putting it on reverse, then drive, then reverse again, etc) Finally got it out, but only the 3rd and reverse gears worked. I thought I killed the transmission, but the next day it was working fine. Is there any reason why the transmission got fixed on its own? The car is a Nissan Altima, 2006 automatic 4 cyl. 67K miles.

Usually when your transmission goes in default mode or the fuse is blown you only have 3rd and reverse

When it goes on default mode, is it normal for the transmission to fix itself the next day? Is the default mode a temporary issue?
