Hello,

I have a 94 J30 with 165k on it. The transmission fluid has never been changed. I want to change the transmission fluid, but my friend, who is a mechanic, said that changing the fluid on a transmission that has never had its fluid changed at that mileage is risky, and is possibly 'holding the transmission together'.

Is this true or can I go ahead with a flush? There doesnt seem to be any apparent problems with the transmission, and the car is in good general working condition.

He said this because he changed fluid when his honda's transmission started slipping and then he lost all gears.

In Nissan transmissions usually it doesnt do any harm, but if the fluid does not come out PERFECT, plan on doing another flush IMMEDIATELY after.. What you can do is loosen particles, and if you od the 2nd flush it shoudl clear everything up. Most people forget to do this the 2nd time around. I would personally plan on doing it twice just for good measure

Before you do the first flush, be sure to drop the pan and clean the magnet/filter.

service it man! drop transmission pan and change filter and gasket and THE ATF (transmission FLUID).

transmission fluid just like oil eventually loses its viscosity (sp?). just kuz you cant feel it, dont wait for it to suddenly give you issues.. Its called Preventative maint for a reason.

Plus when you do change it, that is one less thing you have do worry about.

As for your friend.. his transmission was slipping already.. its just a matter of time when it will go.

when internal damage happens, it doesnt fix itself. anyone on HONDA-TECH.COM will tell you that.
