Heya Folks.

I just bought a 93 J30. It seemed to run ok, drove well enough and handled nicely.

I took it down and had new tires put on it, on the way home the transmission seemed to be "slipping".

When I got it home (about .5 mile) I could smell that the transmission was hot.

There is a trail of transmission fluid into the driveway.

I let the car sit over the weekend and now I can feel the car attempt to move forward when I start it. When I put it in gear it dies and if I put it in Neutral it acts like it is in drive.

Any suggestions?

I bought the car to putt back and forth to work in, looks like i am going to have to spend a bit more than I thought to make it road-ready...

Well you may or may not need a new transmission. At the very least fill it to the proper level. then find the leak and repair it. then replace all the fluid by doing a drain and refill or a BG machine. Also try the AT-CHECK covered in the service manual: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/

If that does nothing then its time for a new transmission.

Thanks Paul. I will start with your suggestions.

I actually really like the car, have been driving it instead of my others for a $1600 work beater it was very nice, hehe.

Can you tell where the leak is from ?You don't want to starve the transmission by running low on fluid. Instant destruction.Could be a hose going to the cooler (Bottom of Radiator)

Make sure the transmission fluid is not overfilled. Overfilling creates heat in the transmission tunnel (you can feel it inside the car by touching the transmission hump) which can cook the components.
