Ok, background: 1997 240sx SE, RB25DET engine, RB20DET transmission. internally identical to the KA24DE transmissions found in all stock 240sx's.

Problem: after car warms up, there is a slight vibration/grinding noise comming after a shift over 2500RPM, only on an upshift (1-2, 2-3 etc) it downshifts without a problem even @ high rpm downshifts and into first while moving. the first thing you would think is syncros right? well this sound happens as i shift into gear and continues for a good couple seconds after i have already engaged the gear inside the transmission. my foot can be completley off the clutch then the sound will slowly let up. i have replaced the slave cylinder, adjusted the pedal till my fingers have gone numb and done everything else i can think of short of pulling the transmission and flushing the transmission (next.)

the sound: the best i can describe it is like cordory pants rubbing together, but a deeper tone.

when i swapped, i did a new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, new TOB.

any advice would be greatly appreciated guys, this has me stumped.

what about the pilot bushing? I am not sure what cordory sound like. A pilot bearing can typically be described as a low pitch screeching noise. This noise typically is heard when the car is cold and will go away once warmed up but if it got worse it could definitly be more constant. I would say your problem is not internal trans as it does the same thing in up shift as it does in downshift.

Edit: I reread your post and the thing that will eliminate the pilot bushing is if when the clutch is completely released the noise still being present. It may be the new T/O bearing as that would wind down after it is released from the pressure plate [ after the clutch is released]

i really really dont think its the pilot bushing because its a very loud noise, ive heard a bad PB before at idle and it sounds nothing like this

let me try to describe the sound this way, think of a vibration noise, just a VRRRRRRRR sound., very loud, very painfull to hear lol

i dobut its the TOB because the sound dosent START till i start to move the selector into the next gear, from one gear into neutral it dosent make the noise. i can run it up to 6000, hold the clutch for a second, then begin to shift and the sound kicks in. im not ruling it out but i just dobut it from what ive seen and heard. to me it sounds like someting internal related, im no expert but ive had my fair share of trannies apart and understand how they work.

what about fluid? could using GL5 cause odd shifting problems?

well GL5 has extra detergents and such that actually start to eat away at the syncros in our trannies. even if this isnt the cause of the problem get that stuff out of there! GL4 fluid only.

I had the same problem with my Silvia transmission which is identical to the KA24DE transmission. The problem with mine was the throw bearing. It would vibrat just like the cordaroy sound when shifting also would grind hard core when shifting above 2000 RPM. Also would grind when trying to down shift at high RPM. Slowly got worse the more I drove the car. I changed baring out to a new heavy duty baring never had a problem since shifts like a champ.
