Transmission Problems

Hey guys,

1995 G20 I bought about 6 months ago. Since then put about 9,000 miles on it (drive for work). Anyway while driving as you come to a stop the transmission (auto) does not return to the lowest gear. If you let the car set and cool down then it will work for a while, but then start up again. Sometimes putting it in park will drop it back into first gear but again after a while of driving it won't do that.

I have checked the transmission fluid level, the fluid does not appear burnt. From the previous owner I understand they had the transmission rebuilt about 1.5 years ago. Thinking substandard repair at this point.

Is there any preventative maintenance that might be done to cure this problem or will it require a specialist to repair?

I had this problem on two different cars I've owned. I'm pretty sure that all automatic transmissions are basically the same. On my cars this was cause from a malfunctioning torque converter solenoid. It allows the transmission to go into neutral (or something like that) when coming to a stop. Here is the kicker it's a pretty cheap part. But, it's inside your transmission. So, you have to drop the transmission and open it up and replace, LOTS of labor involved.

Well, had the transmission serviced and the problem went away for about 30 days. Its back to the same thing only not as bad. I have a real good shop and I need to talk with them about where to go from here. I did go through and tried to find all the ground connections on the motor. The reason I think a ground is the other day it appeared, although not confirmed, to be overheating. As if the fans had quit, and it went really hot. I shut off the air and got the temp down sort of while cruisin down the freeway. When I did get to a stop, the fans were running their little hearts out. There is some suspision the shifting solenoids are not firing. As soon as I save the money its back to the shop.
