Transmission problems

Hi!new to theboard.any help is greatly appreciated!hve 91 pathy runs good.driving down the road,went to accelerate and transmission quits altogether.vehicle starts fine but when shifted into any gear will not engage.have noticed slight variations in rpm's when shifting between gears.not sure if that is relavant.drove thru some water a couple of mile before this happened.have not had any problems with transmission before this.have had ecu problems in the past.Tahnks for the help!

is this an auto transmission?

did ya check the fluid? ive also heard of a dirty transmission filter causing this, but not on a pathfinder. i was waiting for someone else to ask the dumb question..

My atuo transmission did the same thing, except it was in gear and slipped out.Drained transmission fluid, put more in, let her run for a little while, then drained out the fluid, changed the filter and filled her up again. Been running like great ever since.
