So in first the car basicly acted as if in nuetral? Have you tried pulling it back out of first and did it feel normal when you did so? can you still shift into second?
In a transmission the gears actualy stay mated together, and the ones not being used are allowed to spin on the shaft. Shifting into gear actualy slides a collar into place on the side of the gear locking it to the shaft. I doubt you would have stripped all the teath off this, and if you did it would be pretty dramatic....you would know.
One thing that comes to mind is that each set of gears, 1/2, 3/4, 5/R is opperated by a shift fork...Basicly like on the left. It fits around the collar that slides onto the gear to lock it to its shaft. The shifter operates this thing by pulling back and forth on that rod.
the fork part is held to the rod with a roll pin, and if it doesn't wan't to shift into gear forcing can sheer this pin, so that the shifter moves, but the fork doesnt...If this happened you could shift 3-R, but not 1 and 2...
This is really just a random guess, its hard to say based off the little you gave.
perhaps more info? Car, year, miles, type of transmission (I'm assuming its a manual?), work done leading up to this, noise, and a more indepth description (I.E. Once I put it into 1st I did _________ the car did _______ then I ________ finaly I gave up after _______ the car is currently _________)
The more you can tell us the more we can go off.
