Transmission problems? Help!!

Car: Nissan 240sx 1996

I just bought a 1996 Nissan 240sx and the transmission doesn't go in reverse. The guy threw in a new transmission with the car but it's an SR20 Transmission. Will it work with the Stock Engine?? I heard if you take the bell housing off the KA transmission and put it on the SR transmission it will. I need some help.. Thanks
