Transmission Problem

I put a used transmission in today and when I was done installing it, it was stuck in reverse...no matter if i put the shifter in first or second....the reverse lights would stay on...oh yeah and it stays in reverse in neutral as well. I cant get it into 3,4,5,reverse. But it stalls when i put it in 1st or 2nd. PLEASE HELP...

Where'd you get the transmission from? Since it is used, are you sure that it isn't damaged? That's the only thing I can think of unless you didn't install it properly???

Check to see if the shifter is installed in the transmission correctly. Make sure that plastic bushing at end of the shifter is sitting in the control arm.

If thats not the problem then you have to open it up and hope its just the shift linkage, and not a busted transmission.

If you dont feel like opening it up, there is nothing you can do for it(besides pay someone to fix it).

I agree with Leper421. It sounds like the transmission was shifted into reverse then the shifter was removed/reinstalled so that it was basically not in reverse (inserted as if it was removed while in neutral).

If that is unclear - I'll explain - your transmission might actually be in reverse, but the shifter is not lined up in the linkage, rather just dropped in and bolted down.

nah it goes right in the linkage...its busted up...
