I have a 90 Q45. She is beautiful. However, a couple of months ago i began to have a bit of a problem shifting correctly. I would accelerate from a stop and the engine revs to about 4k rpm before hesitantly shifting and this has gotten a little worse as time has passed. I had the trans flushed at 150k by the way, hoping to help relieve the symptoms. Nothing really happened after the flush as I had expected. Then about a week ago I started to slip. Nothing extremely serious but still bothersome. This car is my baby. No scratches, no dings, dents, or paint damage of any kind. Hopefully i wont have to replace the whole trans. i know theyre ungodly expensive. I will save her though. If anyone has specific feedback on this please let me know. Thanks alot.

Sounds like a new transmission rebuild is in order. Same started on mine and got worse quickly. Make sure the shop you go with installs an external cooler. Most here recommend the oem rebuilt for around 1800+core charge+installation- unless you're really confident in your local shop's capabilities. I went with a highly recommended local shop that specializes in performance trannys and it still took them two tries to get it right.

You could try some Lubeguard. Or Lucas has an additive. Make sure your fluid level is correct.

No on the Lucas!

Save your money for a OEM rebuilt one from Joe and a B&M 70264.

You will be so much happier. And it is cheap compared to almost all other brands.

I have been through this firsthand and can save you a lot of heartache. Don't drive the vehicle until you do the following:

1) Drop (or have someone drop it for you) the transmission pan, and have the filter REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE FROM JOE. The flush at high mileage sends all of the crud and junk into the pan where it starves/clogs the transmission filter. There have been numerous articles written about this. Your symptons are dead nuts one...hard shifting, slipping...just after flush. Check the pan, magnet and fluid for metal/dirt/crud. Don't buy the BullSXXX from someone who may tell you "there is no filter for the transmission"...and "you don't need to change it" etc...

Second: Check the radiator heat exchanger to make sure it is not plugged. When under the car, try blowing through the transmission hoses that connect to the radiator. You should be able to clear them with air (be carefull to not swallow the stuff). If you cannot get air to pass, you need to pull the radiator, and have the heat exchanger unplugged with a Nissan chemical formulated to clear the plug.

All of this should not cost you mre than $200. Report the results, and we can go from there.

Thanks for the info. I took her to a highly recommended guy that I was referred to by my other highly recommended guy who knows alot about my Q. My fears were right- she does need a replacement. I thought about going with a used transmission but i trust this guy and am going with a remanufactured one. I plan on keepin her for quite a few more miles- this is the most amazing vehicle I have ever seen. This car has been so good to me and I want to give her the best. I'll post some pics when I get her back- she is gorgeous. I know she'll go another 100k no sweat.

I thought about getting another car... a Honda... haha. Like that could ever compare...just cannot bring myself to let her go. She's truly my baby. Bought her for $5,000 (bluebooked at $6500 at the time) in 2000 and for the past five out of six yrs. I've only done routine maintenance.

If you know its near death, run some Lucas or Lubeguard until it dies. Unless you're taking road trips, you might as well get as much out of it as you can until it dies.

Make sure your guy knows what he is doing. Usually recommended to get the factory reman. from Scottsdale.

I agree. I got another 45,000 miles out of Layla, and she was still running fine, up to 140 MPH when I sold her. I used Lucas in the oil, ps fluid, and transmission.

No matter what Bob the oil guy says, Lucas works, and I will continue to use it. All his tests are at room temperature, and the last time I checked, the transmission runs over 200 degrees F uder normal operation.

All oil regardless of what it is (ATF, oil, etc etc) , wont do a very good job unless its above 100F... Why you notice things that dont get very hot but move use grease, not oil.

BTW, jeff, 200F in a trans is considered overheating, you want to keep them below 200F...

I have to ask ... are the chain guides replaced too? If not, then spend the money to do that too!

Else the transmission replacement might well be money down the drain when the engine goes! And, all indications are that it will go ... just a manner of when, if the guides are not replaced!

If it forms an emulsion at room temperature, I bet it will at higher temperatures until it starts to decomopose molecularly.

If nothing else, it is destroying low temperature viscosity, which is where most wear occurs on cold engine starts. Why risk it?

BUt you really have no way of determinign that..... I dont see any evidence that lucas KILLS transmissions.....

Bottom line is, I wouldnt use it on a normal trans, but it may be what you need to get that extra 500 miles out of the trans...
