Hi, I have a 93' hatchback with a manual. Anyway I was having problems shifting, to be exact i had to force the shift knob into gear because it was so hard to move. Anyway I took it to a clutch shop who said I need new hydraulics, slave and master. I didn't trust them so i wrote it off. About 2 days later my clutch went out. I replaced it and the shifting is MUCH better but there is still hesitation/grinding in gears. My question is, does this sound like syncros, hydraulics, or maybe even clutch adjustment? Neither of the cylinders leak and my pedal comes back up fine. I read the faq on pedal adjustment but does adjusting it with a wrench work as well?(what i did). If the hydraulics are out I want to fix it immediately seeing as it's an easy repair and can damage the clutch. Thanks for your help ahead of time.

I have some of the same problems, but only slightly, one of my buddies said that he heard it was the syncros, but I don't know much about trannies, but maybe the syncros..:( I read on here that the clutches don't need any adjusting....

Good luck.

If you get the problem figured out post a reply for what it was....

it could be the synchros.. for starts, try replacing your transmission fluid with that redline mt-90 or the shockproof one.

My car has the same problems going into 2nd when cold...

Mine is also a 93... I switched my transmission with a 91 and now it only works well when it's cold. I did a clutch disk swap too keeping my old pressureplate and throwout bearing. I sometimes have to force it into gear too but not just to gear 1 but to all the gears. Sometimes it works perfectly smooth but sometimes, it's a PITA.

I had a similar situation with my 92 240 when i had it. If it sounds like the syncro... it starts off as grinding, and eventually it evolves to the point where the car'll jump out of gear, shooting the stick out of position hitting your hand. Personally i think you should change the fluid to something heftier... but don't rule out the hydraulics... but if it doesn't leak or feel squishy, i don't know. if you've got more than 150,000k on your car, it should be a good time to replace those anyways. It's not that hard to replace, you just have to make sure you bleed it correctly and adjust the clutch freeplay. The slave is located on the transmission, and if the nipple's not extending far enough for the clutch to disengage, that could be it, because if either the master or the slave is faulty, even if you press down on the clutch, it might not be disengaging completely, causing your clutch to burn out much quicker. Learn from my mistakes, and just take care of everything at one.
