Not sure really whats going on. I have a 90 240sx ka24e manual transmission, everything is stock. When i start the car and go everything is fine but once the car warms up when i press down on the gas pedal i hear a grinding noise. Happens in any gear once the car warms up. Sounds like a a transmission problem to me but i dont know what. I thought it had to do something with the coolant system since it only start once the car warms up. Replaced the water pump and thermo and still happenes. Car never over heated. Im lost. If anyone in the Nico family can help me thanks

is thou serious?! ok there should be a yellow ended dipstick running down the side of your engine theres two one for oil one for transmission fluid. theres two ways of checking it, cold or hot. if you want to test it hot then just have your car on and pull out the yellow dipstick wipe it clean put itall the way back in let it sit for a second pull it back out and find out what your transmission level is. if you want to do it with a cold transmission and engine then do it in the morning before you start it. same process but with the car off. if its low then just put some more fluid in through the same hole the dipstick came out of. your going to need a funnel. hope this works! and helped!

READ HIS POST. HE HAS A MANUAL TRANS. I have never seen or heard of a manual trans with a dipstick.

On the side of the trans there is a square headed plug about half to 3/4 of the way up the side. Remove the plug and the fluid should be right at the level of the hole. If you search I am sure you will find some pictures. I would recomend that you drain all the fluid out of the trans and refill with fresh. There is a drain plug simalar to the oil pan.

Most people say that to fill it back up you just remove the shifter and the plug. Add fluid through the shifter hole until it comes out plug hole. Put everything back together and you should be good to go.

Any chance the grinding is from the timing chain? it gets warm and loosens enough to rub? If you have the nose while reving the engine sitting stil in netural then it probably is timing chain. If it does not grind in neutral then you have a transmission problem.

If it's a transmission noise it will sound like it's coming from under the shifter. Chain problem noises come from up front.

Check the transmission oil level like the other poster mentioned. If it's low then you need to fill it up, either through the shifter hole on top, or on the driver side filler hole using a pump. If it's low you also need to figure out where it went, as in front or rear transmission seals...

If the oil is good your transmission may be going out.

Sweet thanks for the help everyone. It doesn't make any noise when its just sitting. Only when in gear at moving. And i drove it around with the gear shift rubber off on the inside and it seems like the noise is coming from the transmission. Ill drain and oil and add some fresh stuff in. thanks again for the help. I will let you know what happens. Thanks again

Hope the trans fluid does it for you. If this has been going on for long then you need to start saving your money for a new trans.

Like the other poster said, you need to find where the fluid went otherwise it will just happen again.

It costs a little more but I would fill it with Redline or Royal Purple gear oil. Make sure whatever you use is GL-4 compliant. The Advance Auto gear oil is GL-5 which some say has sulfites that eat yellow metals (your synchros). I used it once on a trans on its way out, and I think it accelerated the process... Who knows, its just better to be safe.

Also you might want to jack up the rear and run the tires in gear (lightly), it may help you pinpoint the noise.
