A couple of days ago my transmission started acting up.

It seems like my clutch grips and then slips under normal driving--I'd say so for sure, but I've never driven a stick before and so this is a whole new experience for me.

The RPM will jump up and down under acceleration like load is being added to and reduced from the engine. It can get very violent during hard acceleration or running at a low RPM (ex: 3rd gear, clutch fully engaged, 20mph).

It happens worse when I try to accelerate faster.

If I ride the clutch and keep it only partially engaged (go ahead, shoot me already), the RPM/acceleration (seems to be) smooth, albeit considerablly slower.

Is this a dying clutch? Any other possibilities?

> A friend of mine told me it wasn't the clutch because the clutch was only "active" when switching gears. This sounds like total BS though, so I'm ignoring him :-)

don't ignore him... ***** slap him! yes that sounds like a dying clutch to me but first you should try adjusting your clutch pedal, that might be your problem.

Mine was so bad that it would jump rpm's when I'd push the accel on cruise control. Dying clutch.

ummm, you have to adjust the pedel on a hydraulic clutch? I thought you only do that on a cable clutch?

Yes... if the clutch engages right off the floor it can have a habit of slipping. See you factory manual on how to adjust it.

As for the slipping... if the clutch was really slipping it would get worse in the higher gears, especially 5th.

Both my friend and me are dumbasses--I'm the bigger one at this point.

My clutch seems to be... passable (after "fixing" the problem it doesn't have any afore-mentioned problems).

The problem was my plugs. (Damn water)Changed them and it runs normally. Actually much better now as I replaced the dist+cap in the process.

I always thought spark plugs worked as a function of RPM, but they are definately also effected by load.
