Transmission options on a VQ40DE

Postby Amarao » Tue Aug 09, 2005 8:50 am

I was wondering if the 6spd from a 350Z could be mated to the VQ40DE. I'm about to start my project and I would prefer to use the VQ40 in my setup so long as I can use the 6spd trannt without too much hassle (as relative as that is). Worse comes to worse I'll just source a VQ35 from a 350Z, at least I know they'll both just bolt up. If anyone can help me with a little info it would be greatly appreciated.

yeah it can, the 05 xterra that has the 4.0 you can get it with the 350z's 6spd tranny. what kind of project are you planning?

Going to put the VQ40DE in a 97/98 240SX. Planing on using a 350Z wiring harness and 350Z ECU. Here is a pic of a VQ30 inside a 95 240SX, the only fitment issue I'm concerned with is the height of the engine.

If anyone has any suggestions or tips I'm all ears.

is the 4.0 L kit the same exact block? I'm talking, everything is going to fit just fine?

very important:i have rebuilt both the vq35 and vq40

vq40 6speed is the 350z six speed but i think the bellhousing is different. i say this because looking at the darn thing it is huge. im 99% sure the vq40 has a larger/different bellhousing pattern and corresponding bellhousing on tranny.

also, vq35de block is same design as older vq30de with different dimmensions. vq40de is very different. its so different that it should have its own family name(instead of vq). its a two piece crankcase split at the crankshaft. the main caps/girdle are all one piece with the lower crankcase/upper oil pan. the last one i had apart i took pictures of. i need to find them and post them.

any vq40/vq30-35 swappage will not be simple bolt on stuff.

Would the VQ40 fit in a 240? It seems like that it would be a bit of a stretch...

vq40 has taller deck height and radically different from the earlier vq engines.

i think the vq40 is just a stroked vq35hr

i could check out if the block part numbers match monday between vq40de and vq35hr i could be wrong

I believe you are mistaken about putting the 350Z transmission on the VQ40. They are using the same bellhousing patterns on the VK45DE, VQ40DE, and VQ35HR which does NOT match the 350Z bellhousing. That's what I have heard and read, but I haven't seen all three side by side especially as new as the VQ35HR is so YMMV.

EDIT: I agree with the previous poster, sorry didn't read that one

Man, I think that's an awesome idea. I was wanting for awhile to swap the vk56 into my g35 coupe but couldn't find anyone that could point me in the right direction. So there I was with a VK56 engine in my garage with JWT cams, k&n intake, pulstar spark plugs and a throttlebody spacer. So since i bought the engine out of a junkyard from a newly totaled truck with only 19,377 miles on it for 500 and the rest only came out to be a few bills more I eventually just sold it for 3 grande. I just previously sold my car so that I could by a lexus sc300 2jztt and then I came across your page here. I was wondering since the vq40 is still a vq engine would it share the same engine mounts. I would assume it would but would rather get the opinions of others. Would love to make a project out of it with g35 coupe holding a vq40 modded engine with maybe a supercharger or even a turbo kit. Anyways, just wishfull thinking... Good luck on the project. Long live the G

So this is interresting.

My VQ35HR may be able to use a truck tranny? does anyone know particular models/years of tranny's that may be compatible with the VQ35HR?

Mostly I'm looking for an 07 350z Tranny.

From what I understand the VQ35HR's engine casting & thus the bellhousing is larger than the DE's. The only engine that I know of that uses the same casting is the VQ40DE. According to an earlier post the VK45DE may also have a similar bellhousing.

Why do you want to put a truck tranny on an your HR?

This is going to be a tough swap since the 350Z's trans (like most nissans) has a built in bellhousing... ie not removable. If you use a trans with a removable bell you can just make up an adapter bellhousing. You could use a Tremec T5 (like from a mustang) although they aren't super stout, or a Tremec TKO (bolt in for a T5 but stronger). If you want 6 speed try a T56 from a variety of american cars. All these trans have removeable bellhousings you could adapter to the pattern on the VQ40.

...thread rez....but build ever get done?

what block/heads/trans etc combination did you end up going with?

my thoughts for my car, if this is plausible.

but just curious:

base car: 03 G35 6MT coupe

with a VQ40DE block VQ40DE heads OR VQ35DE heads IF they'll fit (cams are swappable, just not sure if vq35de heads would fit on vq40de block) VQ35HR 6MT tranny

will it work?

from my understanding the VQ40DE is basically a stroked VQ35HR or DE, with a DE head design. Either way it'll need a HR tranny to mate with the VQ40DE block.

well...unless someone says the VQ40DE block and HR tranny won't bolt up I'm probably gonna go ahead with this build and just see what happens. I can't seem to find a yay or nay anywhere on the web if it's already been done in any Z or G or anywhere for that matter. But I can't find if anyone has tried and failed either. So I'm gonna be the first? I can't believe that.If anyone has a link with ANY car with a VQ40DE in it (besides the xterra, frontier, pathfinder, or damn Suzuki Equator) then link it up!

..wish me luck!

same trans. same bell housings. same blocks. different stroke. thats it. vq40 has more power. a lot more low end torque.

and not really an option to use the vq40 with the vq35 ecu. dont do that. thats stupid.

I'd kinda like to know too. I guess I'd be along ways off from doing this but can't you just get a wrecked xterra or something with a v6 and 6speed for a good price.
