Hey guys , new here. I have a 1996 pathfinder 3.3 5spd. It has about 255000 km on it. A couple months ago started to make a grinding, rumbling noise from the clutch area. It is pretty loud. Mechanic told me it it the release bearing? Quoted me with clutch kit around $1000 with labour. I want to save money so I tried to remove transmission myself but way over my head. Anyway, bought a new clutch disc, release and pilot bearing as well as clutch release cylinder. From what i keep reading i wonder if it isn't the transmission bearings?? All the noise goes away when I push in the clutch pedal. And by the way when i was under truck the release cylinder basically fell apart in my hand and was leaking for who knows how long. Changed that anyhow. But truck shifts totally fine????? Even better now. Just brutally noisy when clutch pedal is out. anyone have ideas??????

Not one person has replied. I will say i just drove the pathfinder 250 km and gradually the noise went away. Now it is totally normal except a little noise and roughness when downshifting or letting off the gas. Opposite of before. Shifts good and smooth and quiet now. what the hell???

might be your throw out bearing starting to go bad.

If the slave cylinder was inoperable, then the pressure plate was probably not fully engaged, hence the grinding was from your gears in the transmission 'grinding'. Not good.

If the throw-out bearing were bad, then when you pressed the clutch pedal, you would have heard grinding or growling. The severity based whether the bearings were out of round or not there.

If I were you, I'd drain the transmission oil as you might find some metal flakes.
