okay, so I have a 2010 Rogue S FWD and am going to hit 15k miles. Over the last 2,000 miles I have noticed a distinct ringing noise, I am assuming from the CVT. really only happens at a low speeds, or at idle. above 25mph I can't hear it (then again, its hard to hear anything above 25mph with windows open).
I know how a CVT works, but is this normal?

I used to have a snowmobile (which had a CVT type transmission/clutch) and that would ring pretty loudly- totally normal for those though.

Anyway, any thoughts?
Thanks!

My general rule regarding CVT is that it shouldn't make substantial noises different from a regular transmission - basically other than the no-shifting and little different rpm behavior, you should not know that you are driving a CVT. And the Jatco/Nissan CVT bears almost no resemblence to a snowmobile CVT, it's design is vastly different.

I've never heard a ringing coming from my Rogue as you describe, if the noise is distinct that is probably a good thing so that your service tech will be able to reproduce and diagnose the noise. I can't offer much of a guess what his could be, failed CVT's can sometimes make a whining noise, or a rattle at lower speeds but I've never heard a ringing noise reported.

I'd recommend having this diagnosed by your Nissan service department, the good news is you still have lots of warranty which should take care of you. Good luck and please let us know the outcome...

Thanks for your reply.

Not quite the news I was hoping for though... I dislike my Nissan dealer :(

I'll drop the car off sometime next week, its hard because this is our only car between the two of us, and after 15k in miles, this isn't what I expected.

I also noticed the car seemed to be idling a bit rough. It seemed to go away when I re-fueled, so I was thinking bad gas. But just came back from lunch with my office- and the rough idle is back... ugh!

I was just in the dealer for my 12,000 mile service about 1 month ago too. The car got a clean bill of health.

I'll post an update once I have one.

DC don't take my initial guess as a final assessment, I've really never heard a bell/ringing noise, but after thinking about it a bit more this noise could be coming from the engine. Do you feel it could be engine ping? If you notice rough idle as well, your engine timing, air/fuel mixture etc. could be the issue.

I think your service department will be able to diagnose this and it may be a simple fix.

No worries, I value your input. It gives my thoughts a bit of re assurance that something isn't right.

Overall the car has done great. Last month we had some awful weather with 100+ degree days for several days in a row. AC worked great, although sucked a lot of power from the car and got horrible MPG's- but it handled it better than my last two cars did.

Thanks again for the input.
