I have a 1991 q45 and sometimes when its really cold like 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit I get a "Transmission Malfunction" error message and I did the check but I stays at the "A/T Check screen" I can't seem to get a code which i think is good or I might be doing the test wrong.

Is that normal or is there something wrong with the transmission the car has 166000 miles.

Somehow I don't think this 166k was the as built transmission..........as far as I know almost every 91 failed prior to warranty.

Age is more important than miles. Few lasted 7 years, pretty much the same with Nissan rebuilds 7 years is a good life.

Why you budget and save $400 per year as prorated life of transmission. Some have lasted 10 years depends on shifts per mile.

But then again 10,000 miles per year [average] is so low hard for me to relate to the typical ATL situation same with Cold weather [which might have been somewhat protective] until now?

Best to find a Consult and read the codes.
