I have a 2007 altima that is not locked in drive. I cant start it. I wanted to know how hard it is to replace a transmission. does it have to be pulled from the top or can it be dropped from the bottom. Do I have to drop the sub frame in order drop the transmission or can I drop it with the sub frame still in?

Does the shifter not move? Or does it move, but the car remains in drive?

If the shifter doesn't move, the problem could be as simple as a bad neutral switch or a problem in the shift mechanism.

Let's rule out the easy stuff before pulling out a transmission!

No, the shifter doesn't move out of drive. I can put it in manual to drive but that's it. I swapped out the neutral switch and tcm but no luck. I brought it to a nissan Dealership and they said that they took the shift cable off to try and change gears by hand and that didn't work either.

Did the dealer provide any other suggestions as to what the problem may be? Have you experienced any sort of transmission related problems prior to this?

Let's start with simple stuff, moving to harder stuff.

Shift lock solenoid is the most common cause, and has been documented elsewhere with other Nissan models. It's under the console, and you can pull up the FSM (nissanservicemanual.com) to find it. Dealer should know about this, and should have no issue getting you one if it's bad. Easy to test - Run 12v from the battery and ground to the 2 terminals respectively, it should pop. If not, it's dead.

Make sure ALL fuses are good, especially the one for the shift lock system - should be fuses 12 and 21 (junction block fuse box).

Make sure your brake lights are operational - Replace brake light switch if needed.

Find the shift lock control unit (behind the gauge cluster) - make sure power and ground to the shift lock control unit are good (multimeter needed).

Replace the shift lock control unit with a known good unit (the dealer may be able to help here).

Apparently there was a TSB for this, which calls for replacing the shift lock solenoid AND/OR the shift lock control unit.
