I have just bought a 97 J30. The car looks and feels in very good shape, it has 53000 miles. It is making something wierd to me: If I I leave the gas pedal off driving 50-60 miles per hour, when I push the gas pedal again the RPM go up like the transmission were disconnected, and immediately I can feel suddenly like the transmission were engaged again pulling the car. There is not any wierd noise, only this sort of pulling with RPM going up and down when there is transmission again. I wonder if this is normal or how I can fix it.

Sounds like quite a find on your J! I suspect that what you're feeling is the torque convertor locking and unlocking. When you let off on the pedal, the T/C will unlock. Then when you press it again at moderate acceleration, it should lock - bringing the RPMs down maybe around 200RPM... the first second or so is the RPM rise (due to pressing the gas) and then they drop as the t/c locks.

Just to be on the safe side I'd go ahead and have a transmission flush, pan drop, and filter replacement. With your low mileage, you have an opportunity to do some preventive maintenence that can really help things!

I understand that the lock and unlock of the torque converter is normal but that abrupt pulling is really unconfortable. Is there any way to adjust that to make the locking smoother when I re-push the gas pedal after letting it off? I have notice that this car does that with the transmission either in drive or 3rd.

I will appreciate any input.

Thanks

I think a transmission flush and filter change may help a lot. From what I understand a new transmission will drop more clutch material into the pan and filter than one that is broken in... so if yours (at 53K) has never had a pan drop and filter replacement - you'll want to do that anyway.

The absolute best way to do this in my opinion is:

1) Have shop run transmission cleaner through cleaning cycle. (5min each gear on lift at about 1500-2000RPM)

2) Flush with conventional ATF

3) Drop Pan, Replace Filter, Install new gasket and reinstall pan.

4) Flush again with Mobil 1 ATF.

This will probably cost you about $200, but I think it's the best way to really get everything out of there.

Then when you're done you can see if this helped your lock/unlock issue. If not you've ruled out anything that can be done with preventive maintenence and it's time to have a dealer hook it up to Consult (Nissan's Diagnostic Computer) and see if all of the sensors are OK.
