okay my s14 transmission was grinding from 2nd to 3rd. i had the clutch changed and replaced the fluid with redline mt-90. when i drove it home from the mechanic there was no more grinding and i stored it back in the garage because there's still lots of gravel. then today i took my car to the autobody and now it was grinding from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. could it be because of the cold weather i'm experiencing grinding? because the day i drove it home it was 15 degrees celcius, and today i drove it to the autobody and it was -2 degrees celcius. any help will be appreciated, thanx.

maybe the slave cylinder is going bad or there may be some air in the lines...have somebody watch your slave cylinder while you press the clutch pedal a couple times. see if it's pushing the little piston rod completely in and out.

Redline MT-90 is 75 weight at 0 degree's fahrenheit and 90 weight at 210 degrees fahrenheit. The higher the weight, the thicker the oil. Since factory recomends 80w-90, MT-90 should be even better for cold use given that the oil is thinner at startup for better initial cold weather lubrication.

Anyways, I doubt its the oil, defiantly check over your hydraulic clutch system.

Check the hydraulic system. When it gets cold my maxima likes to leak fluid out of the seals on the clutch master. Check fluid level on the clutch master. If it full I would try bleeding the system then go from there. Rebuilding the clutch master can be done for about $12 by you and a new slave should be under $30.

okay, i bleed my clutch system and had it replaced with new fluid. now when i start up the car, it grinds from 1-2-3 and a bit from 3-4 until the transmission warms up a bit then it stops grinding. what are your guy's thoughts on this? i pretty much double clutch when i first start driving till it warms up and shift as usual. i really want to get this out of the way so i can drive my 240 in peace.

If you kept that box with 4 lines connected to it THROW IT AWAY!! Take the line that comes from the master cylinder and connect it straight to the slave cylinder. You will have to bend it around a 180 degrees. Take your time while doing it so you don`t kink the line. Here is a pic of mine on a table before I threw it away.

^YES do what he said ASAP^

After my 5sp swap i would have to bleed the clutch every 20-30 miles, that was a *****. For some reason we put that thing on when doing the swap. After I took it off the problem was gone.

It could simply be that your synchronizers are going bad inside the transmission. Very common problem for Nissan manual transmissions.....

Very common for *any* manual synchro transmission to wear its teeth down as it ages--- hard driving, and poor fluid changing habits will cause that.

Is it expensive/difficult to replace synchro's?

i always guessed it was the syncro but i wasn't sure due to the fact that once the transmission warmed up it didn't grind... i guess i'll drive it for the time being till i swap an sr20 in it.
