Sorry guys if this is posted elsewhere, but I did try searching... which year's transmissions are interchangeable with the '90? That funny little noise downshifting to 2nd is telling me it's about time for a new transmission. I've seen a lot of '91+ on both the classifieds here and ebay, but am not sure if they will work. Are there other models (e.g. pickups) with the KA motors that will swap transmissions?

As always, any help is greatly appreciated

No, sohc and dohc KAs use totally different transmissions. You should be able to find a very cheap sohc transmission very very easily. If you havent yet, your not looking very hard. In fact, its probably easier to find a sohc transmission for dirt cheap than it is to find the dohc.

KA24E your pretty much alone. MAAAYBE the CA transmission would work, but such a silly idea anyhow.

KA24DE transmission can be used on the SR with the exception of the s15. And I think you may need a different bell housing to fit it properly, but i could be wrong.

feel free to correct me.

i read somewhere that in japan ppl were switching to 5 speed in the s15, so I don't see why it wouldn't work...then again i don't know..

I have installed a SOHC transmission onto a DOHC car before and it ran much better than my buddy's old transmission that would grind in 2nd and couldn't get into 1st. So in my view they are interchangable. My buddy had a 91 and I installed an 89 transmission in there. I would think that the s13's are all interchangable. The 95+ I would think the same as they're basically the same motor as the 91-93 DOHC's but they may have changed the bell housing, aka I wouldn't risk that.

Is there any 6 speed that will fit the KA24DE without too much custom fabrication? Or a stronger five speed, something geared a little different for after I build my motor so I can get high speeds without being at 7500 rpms..

To the original question, I would have thought they were interchangeable between the SOHC and the DOHC...at least up to 93/94

I could definitely be wrong though :)
