I'm in the middle of an auto to 5 speed swap, and last night I was having problems getting the 5 speed back in.

Maybe its because I was exhausted but I could not for the life of me get the bell housing to clear the front of the transmission tunnel. I've removed/installed other 240sx 5spds at least 6 times but I couldn't remember the angle you have to hold the trans in and rotate it to fit...

what position is the starter hold supposed in for everything to clear and for the trans input shaft to line up with the crank?
(Ie, looking from the from of the car to back, 9 o clock)

the damn swap was supposed to be up and running last night but instead I fought with my transmission for almost 2 hours...

You can always loosen the motor mount bolts and jack u the front of the engine an inch or so.

i didn't loosen the motor mount bolts (probably because they were so worn out) but i took a flat wood so i didn't dent the oil pan and jacked the engine up a little like OutToWin said

You should probably loosen the mounts so that you dont tear em apart.

I had the same issue with my SR, I ended up pullin the motor and puting them in together as one peice.

remember to put a dab of grease on the input shaft to help it slide into the bushing. when i put transmissions in, especially with a light one like in your 240, i just put it on my chest and use my knees to adjust it. also try rotating the bellhousing back and forth and move the end of the transmission in a circular pattern at the same time. then once its slid in the bushing just rotate it until the bellhousing pops on the dowel pins.

I just know I couldn't for the life of me get my trans on with the motor in the car, but put it on in like two seconds outside of the car. But putting back alone sucks.

I think I figured out the problem... unfortunately its a really simple one and I feel like an idiot for not realizing it...
the motor mounts in my car are new-ish, and when I went to jack on the oil pan (with a wooden board) it didn't really move any. all of the other 240's I've pulled/installed transmissions on had old a** worn out motor mounts... the engine naturally tilted back toward the firewall giving me the angle I needed...

DOH!
