I am trying to figure out what transmission I have with the Datsun 521 I just picked up. The motor and tranny were sitting in the bed of the truck. The tranny has 1720 692 on the top of the transmission case. My chilton book doesn't have that number for any of the transmissions. Does anybody know what those numbers mean?

Take a picture, post it here.

If it is attached to an L series it is probably a F4W63.

do you have any idea what those numbers mean? in my chiltons book they say there is a 720d series, which is a 5 speed. I didn't know if the 1720 692 meant it was a 720 series.

I do not I do know that the 5 speed is 31.5" long and the four is around 26". There are some exceptions, however.

Click my user name, it should be in there.

If the engine and transmission are the original then it is a 4speed. The removable bottom pan only came on the 4 speeds if i remember correctly.

The engine is an L16 which i had from my other 521 that I sold, but the tranny came with the other 521 I bought not too long ago. The only reason I got curios is when I started to mount tht tranny to the engine and putting the inspection plate at the bottom and noticed that the holes on the bottom of the tranny are way bigger than the other holes on the other tranny. Also the holes are standard thread instead of metric. But all the holes line up on the tranny.

Someone must have drilled and tapped it, I had to do this to my starter bolt holes. I think the manual says around 15-30 lb ft for tranny to engine bolts, which isn't much, some one probably went a little overboard and turned the threads into mushh.

Hey I had another question for you? Have you had to replace your motor mount or had to deal with them at all. I am trying to order a new set because the ones I have are the wrong ones for my truck. I found a set on ebay but they don't look right! So I am just curios if you have heard or dealt with this issue.

never on a truck but on a 510, yes

The first time I swapped a motor into a 510 was on a friends car, at night.... and it took foooorreevver. You have to make sure the mounts are on the correct side. Have the mounts attached loosely to the cross-member and sandwich the engine between them. Slowly raise and lower the engine to get everything to line up, then sneak a bolt in. It was a pain, and took us way longer than it should have. We thought we had the wrong mounts too, and took the ones off the old motor and realized we just had them crossed . Silly noobs we were.
