Very annoyed. It has been 2 months since my SR first started up, and we found that the tranmission hooked to it was butter. I am $240 in for 'diagnostic' labor, and another $325 for a 19k mile KA transmission that Heavy Throttle told me I could use.

My shop now tells me that it could be a month or more before they can swap that transmission in.. B/C They need 'more specific information' on what parts to use. I have spoken with the Guys at HT more than once, and HT has spoken with the shop.. They explained that you only have to 'swap the bellhousing'

Question: What do i tell my shop? "Swap the bellhousing?" as i have said before? What 'specific information' might they need? I have the torque specs right here..

Do it yourself!

It can't be more than a 2 hour job and all you need is a set of sockets and a torque wrench.

If your shop is going to be that gay, screw them.

It's not too difficult.

2 bolts hold the driveshaft in place, drop that, the driveshaft will drop down. Make sure you have a bucket, all your transmission fluid will come pouring out. Then there are four bolts holding the transmission crossmember on, drop those, and hold your transmission up with a jackstand. Unbolt the two bolts holding the slave cylinder on, and unhook the wiring harnesses. Then there should be 15 bolts holding the transmission to the engine (IIRC) (will need to be retorque'd). Don't forget to unbolt the starter seperately, otherwise you might drop it.

After that, a bellhousing swap is in order. I haven't done that, I don't know of any problems that may or may not need to be remedied, but it shouldn't be a real difficult assignment. A new TO bearing and pilot bushing probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

It's an easy job, have them call us again and I will try to be more detailed in my description. 8>)

For god's sake get a fresh pilot bearing. Mine didn't get swapped on my current motor and it squeals like a bastard when the car is cold....doesn't hurt anything, just hella annoying and even more annoying to replace ones you've got your transmission all buttoned up in the car.

If you're going to take out the transmission, might as well do the clutch and flywheel. Go to the 240sx.org FAQ section and look up "Clutch installation" They have pretty detailed step-by-step instructions posted by various people. It's a pretty easy job, all you need is a couple of tools, some buddies and a 12-pack of Coronas (LOL). I did the job in about 4 hours with 2 friends. The only way to learn is by doing. And all that $$ you can save from labor can be invested into something better. Good luck.

The new clutch has less than 100 miles on it, same with the TO bearing. I have heard things both ways about the Lightened flywheels.. so I think i'm gonna skip that.
