Hello everyone. I have a s13 sr20det blacktop unknown miles 189hp. Stock transmission with Maxima Clutch, redline mt-90 oil.

THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURED BEFORE THE transmission OIL CHANGE, AND HAVE STOP FOR A PERIOD OF TIME, AND NOW IS BACK.

Problem: When clutch is depressed, I hear a loud grinning sound. I have a very hard time Going into 1st gear from stop, and reverse. I have to clutch a few times, and push real hard to get in gear.

Other info: If i shift to neutral, let my car roll to a stop, and seconds before the car actually stops I can clutch and get into 1st smoothly most of the time. I recently changed transmission oil. It came out green, and blackish. I refilled with 2.5liters of redline, and now i added another .5 liters because i thought i was low on oil, problem still present. While draining the transmission, I found this piece of metal coming out from the drain hole.

I have researched and read many posts, and I learned that when clutch is depressed, and grinning sound occurs is Throw-out bearing.

QUESTIONS:What are all you expert opinions for the cause of my transmission problem?

Would a worn throw-out bearing prevent geting into gear?

Do I have to remove the entire transmission from the car to inspect the throw-out bearing?

Is there a way to inspect the transmission internals with out removing the transmission from the car?

How do I remove the transmission, what tools are required, how high off the ground do the car have to be, and where can i find a rebuild kit?

Any advice and comment will be greatly appericated and thank you for reading my long post. Really appreciated.

You should go ahead and pull your transmission out. Sounds like you might have some synchronizer wear. Might want to take it to a shop or just swap in another one if you aren't very comfortable or experienced. I just got done rebuilding my transmission and it can be overwhelming for some taking that much stuff apart.

Here is picture of throughout bearing. ( it's the round thing on the input shaft )Basically, it transfers the force of you pushing down on the clutch, to a spinning clutch pressure plate, that releases the clutch. As you can see from the picture, it is located on the end of a fork that is not "inside" the transmission. There is no way that it could contaminate the fluid.

I agree that you have a throughout bearing making some noise and it could cause your problems, But I have no idea what was drained out of your gearbox. The syncro gears are made of a brass alloy and usually wear out on the tapered face. That looks like shim stock or stainless steel.

Ok, thank you guys for replying. I'm going to pull my trannny out later today. I will also have the weekend to work on it.

CSUPUEBLOTIM, you rebuild a sr20det transmission right? Where did you get the parts and how much was it?

Can you guys write a short guide on how to remove my transmission? thank you.

I got just a bearing and seal kit from this guy http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...witem= and its actual Nachi bearings. As far as syncros though you have about 3 options. New from Nissan (about $300+ with buddy discount), Autozone sells an entire kit with bearings and Syncros for about $150ish, or they sell complete bearing and syncro kits http://www.importdrivetrain.co...s.htm . As far as a detailed write up there is this http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=239220. If you got any more questions feel free to ask, but ya I just built 2 of them and getting ready to start a 3rd.

thank you brotha. when i logged on this morning i saw another thread with similar problem, and they said he bled the clutch cylinders wrong so his clutch is mess up now.

Ok.... the way i bled it was... my dad press the pedal a few times, hold it to the floord, and i release the valve on slave. we repeated.... over and over.

Is that a correct way to do this? If i can get into gear freelly when the car is not runing.. is that a sign of bad clutch ?

Your transmission is propably fine. I have the same proble that clutch wasn't totaly off when pressing pedal and gearbox still revs inside. Change pressure bearing and fill clutch lines with a new fluid. Also problem can be in used pressure plate cause metal springs touching bearing can be used and angle that gives presure arm is not enought to disangage clutch. Sorry for my english
