what kind should i use and can i fill my transmission through the shifter area before the shifter is re-installed?

I would use 80W140. Many people will tell you to go with this brand or that brand. Personal preference I guess. As far as filling from the shifter, (can this be done?) I wouldn't (that’s just me). I would rather fill from the side of the transmission. You can check the level better rather than guessing. Hope that halps.

DO NOT GET GL5 OIL! It will eat all the brass in your transmission, IE the synros!

The only fluids I know work is the napa GL4 gear oil (cheap but kinda thick, works good though) Redline MT-90 (kinda expensive but works great) and pennzoil synromesh. I use the synromesh in all my manual nissans since it doesn't have the additives that tear up synros, its pretty common to find and its middle of the price range.

You can get it at advance auto, autozone and pepboys. And probably other places.

Redline MT-90 is all i use and it works great!!! you can buy it online for about $6
