Hello,

I am planning to do a transmission flush next week. I am just wondering how many quarts of Mobil 1 ATF do I need in order to fill it back up after the flush and where is the best place to buy Mobil 1 ATF since I can find a lotta place that carry this.

Let me know and thanks for the help!!

It depends on how thorough you want to be. If you're doing it yourself, 7 or 8 quarts is about all you can drain. On a flush machine I think about 14 gets it all swapped out. Call around to auto parts places and Mobil oil suppliers to get the best price. I think there's a pretty decent break on the case price and larger containers. We could really make out on a 55 gallon drum if about 15 of us got together!

When you guys do a transmission flush yourself, do you actually drain the torque convertor?

IIRC, the service manual says 11.5qts for the drivetrain.

Can't drain the torque converter yourself, need the flush machine to exchange all the fluid.

A proper "full" flush (requires two full flush cycles) with filter change, etc., needs 28 quarts. The first flush could be done with cheaper ATF, followed by a Mobil 1 flush for the final 14 quarts. Check out my old posts on this topic!

I worked at a Mobil distributor for a few years and there were some race guys that ordered M1 Trans./55 and it was suprisingly cheap. So was delvac 5/40. I'll find out for curiosity's sake.

Thanks for all the input guys, well I dont know how to do a flush nor I have the flush machine. I called Jiffy lube today and those guys cant seem to help.

I ask the Manager that if I can use Mobil 1 ATF to flush and said he couldn't. He can only use their own ATF. So does anybody know where I can get a quality flush and how much will they usually cost??

I am in So Cal so will Jerry Tucker in SD able to help with those??

Thanks!!

You can call different shops and ask them to refer you if they dont offer a torque converter flush. Thats how I found a local performance shop called RPM. They do everything by the book and was the only place in town (that I found) that did a Mobil 1 flush of all transmission fluid, including the contents of the torque converter. Unfortunately, that high-quality service and experience came at a hefty cost of just under $100/hr. An M1 transmission flush plus an oil and filter change ran me $302.

I wish I still made the kind of money where maintenance expenses like that werent so bad.

i'm sure jerry tucker can steer you in the right direction for a complete flush, if he can't do it himself. mine took 20+ quarts of mobil 1. expensive, but worth it.jeff

http://www.bgfindashop.com/ will let you begin your search. Do call any shop first as the data base is not at all current, but the local distributor will know who has what.

The other option is to ask the SnapOn jobber who services your area which of his accounts has the Sun machine, which is also good for the PS fluid extraction or exchange (about another gallon of ATF).

Jerry will be able to take care of you well.

Based on my careful pbservation of 3 different transmission flushes, it takes 14-18 qts of fluid to get the 'coming out' to look as clear and bright as the fresh going in. So--if you first flush with fresh regular, then fill the machine with 14 qts fo M1and then run it dry--you should be +/- 100% M1 fluid.

I suggest a standard flush, runit a week, drop the pan and change the filter while up on the rack at the transmission flush place, and then run 12Qts of Mobil 1 into it.

EZ-Lube in socal will do M1 flushes, and I think they either only use M1 or they prefer it.

Thanks for all the input guys, so how much am I looking at doing a flush? And how do I know if the shop is doing a flush instead of just a fluid change? Do they use a machine that is very easy to recongize?? Sorry for all the newbie questions.

Yes, watch them. The Sun machine uses clear hoses so you can see the different colors of new ATF vs. used ATF.
