I apologize upfront for bringing up a subject that has been over done. However, I have searched for information on transmission flush procedures and have read hundreds of posts but I am still not perfectly clear on the best procedures for a transmission flush. Is there a post or information that clearly describes the recommended method, fluids and amounts. To add to my confusion the tech that I was planning to have do the flush says that a machine flush is a waste. This shop specializes in transmissions and they don't have a flush machine on the premises. I have 130,000 miles on my 1996 Q and the transmission is holding up well and I would like to extend its life as long as possible.

The obvious question is whether the transmission specialty shop would rather flush your transmission or sell you a rebuilt one.

The "flush" is simply a process for getting nearly all the old fluid out while replacing it with new fluid. Fluid exchange process is a better term. One drawback is that the filter doesn't get replaced with a simple fluid exchange. Capacity is around 10 quarts, don't know the exact number for the 96 model offhand.

How can they specialize in transmissions without an exchange machine.......maybe you mean to say they specialize in replacing transmissions!

An exchange machine is not very profitable unless you take short cuts [in time for proceedure or ATF or additives].............in many ways an exchange machine has cost T3 lots of money------lost from not replacing transmissions.

If you expend 45 minutes for $120 [cost $43 in materials] less cost/operation/repairs of machine you are selling labor at a rate below shop rate. Unless you cheat on time or are able to do something else simultaneously.

There are many more profitable jobs than a transmission flush.

I am going to cancel my appointment and search for someone who can do a proper fluid transfer. I still would like to have a clear step by step instruction of the best way to have it done. Please let me know if there is somewhere it is already explained. Thanks for your help.

Yes, it has been explained repeatedly. Try a search (there is a tutorial sticky in Infiniti General) and if you cant find it, post again. Must read previous posts.

Get the gasket, filter and one time use bolts from Joe.

Go to to distributor or Autozone type and get M1 ATF 3 cases = 18 qts.

Get a cooler (I recommend a B&M 70264) from Summit Racing or a speed shop. You can go to my board name under Member's Rides for pictures of some installations. Numerous other discussions on this topic alone.

Go to http://www.bgfindashop.com/ and start calling to see if they still have the ATF exchange machine and get a feel for their experience. A personal visit is always part of my screening. Another alternative is to talk to a Snap-On jobber and see who has the Sun flush machine (this can extract replace your PS fluid also and thereby use the extra 4 qts. of M1 you pruchased above). Don't neglect your differential or brake fluid if you have not replaced them as the car will be on the rack anyway.

Have them drop the pan, clean the magnet and wipe the pan clean examining for any deposits or bits. Replace the screen filter. replace pan with one way bolts and new gasket. Perform fluid exchange. This assumes your fluid is still red. If brown or worse, may want to use some BG cleaner first, flush with conventional ATF, then do the pan filter procedure and flush with M1. Many use 6 0z. of Lubeguard red to get the ATF closer to Nissanmatic specifications.

You should time the BG machine as it uses the interal pump to transfer. It will tell you a lot about the condition of your transmission. The Sun machine has two translucent hoses that allow you to see the colors of the new vs. old fluid.

There is more, so happy searching!
