Called Goodyear can do a transmission flush. Quoted $165 using thier mercon 3 oil. O'rielly's said that oil was fine, but the recommended oil is the Nissan D which cost $16 qt from the dealership x 16 qts. You do the math. Am I safe going with the Mercon 3? Anyone know? Jspout

You do not need 16 quarts. Whenever I do flushes at work we only use 8 quarts plus 1 to top off with, hell the capacity is only 8.75 qts.

He may be talking about a drain/refill.I went through quite a bit until what drained out looked just like what I put in.

Drain -refill exact amount -drive through all the gears. Repeat.

After first drain I dropped and cleaned the pan and replaced the O-Ring and screen.

If you can find a place that does a full transmission flush with a machine (new fluid is put in and old fluid is flushed out) I would advise that. That's how all the cars I've ever owned have been done. IMO the best way to do it.

This is how the Goodyear mechanic explained the flush to me: First, a wash or solvent cleaner is flushed in forcing out all of the fluid. He said the pan only holds about 4 qts and there is still the majority is not drained. So most fluid changes, even though you are changing out the filter, the new fluid is incompletely exchanged. Next, he said they drive the car for 10 minutes which cleans all the parts and gears as well as the filter screen. He said as long as there are no leaks in the pan, this is more efficient method. Then they flush again with a conditioner and refill the fresh fluid. I am psyched about this site and learned tons about this car already. I will give details of my experiences as well. Thanks guys!

I looked at the transmission fluids at the autoparts and the fluid is Dexron/mercon III. You were both correct. Mercon IV is Ford. As long as I have a support team in my corner, I think I can do this. Jspout( young padawan), the new hack on the block!

How many miles on the transmission now ?

And is the fluid in good shape or brownish with a burnt smell ?I heard many say the BG machine is the best for a mechanical flush.

The car has 159K not really sure of the history, I bought it as a bank repo. It runs sweet and has no real transmission issues, but the fluid is sort of a pinkish brown, don't smell burnt though. I better get it changed!!!

"the new fluid is incompletely exchanged."

Thats why you drain and refill several times.about 90/95 % is changed if you keep going until what drains looks like the new going in.Used two plastic buckets to match amount to refill.Side by side you can match quantity.

OK then, sounds like a lot of work, $60 worth of fluid and $40 for the filter and gasket kit and pan removal, and still only 90-95% exchange. Hmm I think I will go for the flush this time around. Maybe the next one I try that way.

That's why I asked how many miles on the transmission.a Chemical flush may be a bad thing for a worn transmission.

Well, did the flush, and cleaned the MAF sensor= J30 very happy. Runs so much better. No longer rushes to change gears and 5mph more for the same rpms. Now just need new struts! Any one have a spare strut laying around they want to get rid of? PPPPLEASSSSE

Yep, on the freeway sluggish feeling gone. damn miracle! Cruised 70mph for the same rpm 65mph before. Even the seasoned Jedi Master says "impossible is only limmitations of the mind" (and depth of the pocket book)

Only the transmission slipping before would cause this..You do understand how a Automatic Transmission works right ??

You must not have been achieving lockup.Let us know how the transmission runs in a few months.

And the sluggish thing was quite possibly a dirty MAF sensor.

All I know is it runs better, and no, I know nothing about automatic trannys. Prefer manual anyway. If I keep the car, someday somehow I will change to a 5 speed. These trannys seem computer and sensor driven nightmares. Just posting the results. You all know a lot more about Js than I.

Please know I wasn't busting your chops I really do want you to keep us posted on how your transmission holds up.I have pondered a BG Flush but fear the outcome soon after.

You could ease it in with some drain and refills then when the color and smell change then go to a BG machine.

But the BG machine works the same way as the drain and refills just that the machine uses the cleaner and additive. Talk to Texasoil if you want to know more because he is a extremely knowledgeable guy.

So far so good.... They did'nt really drive it with the solution in it except on the rack they ran it through the gears. I eased it back into use just a few blocks at a time without high revs, but it seams normal. I smelled a little burn off the first couple days, but I think it was just spilled stuff on the outside or resedue. I was'nt having transmission issues before the flush. I know these can be tempermental Trans. but I don't see how cleaning the varnish buildup out every once in a while could hurt it, unless not done professionally. Still pink and happy! I'll let you all know if it blows up. I think I found some used struts I can afford. Would prefer new but broke. Cross your fingers.
