Can you hurt the transmission if you change the transmission oil more often on J30? How long anyway can you drive the car before any change? What is recommended?

If your transmission is already slipping or having problems, transmission fluid changes can exceberate the problem rather then curing it.

That's what I heard too. I wanted to replace the fluid and the filter. Anyway I'm not gonna take the chance.transmission seems not so bad now considering the fact that it's getting old.I'm gonna leave it the way it is. Is it really a big deal if when youn check the transmission fluid level the dipstick shows about 3-5 mm over the max line.I know you can hurt the transmission if you put too much oil but is this considered too much? Thanks

Bah. I disagree. That myth that changing the fluid can ruin the transmission is more so for way older cars. You have to think of it like this. The fluid breaks down after so long from the heat that it cannot do its job. Thus because the oil is broken down the transmission slips...

My transmission was slipping I believe and after I got the TRANSMISSION FLUSHED it stopped. That is a fact, knock on wood!.

However if your torque converter is going or the gears are going there would be metal shavings in your fluid. So I suggest that you drop the pan and check for metal shavings. If there are none I would get it flushed.

Did you get a chemical flush Alex ??Or just a fluid exchange.

Yes just droping the pana nd drain and refill is less likly to dislodge sothing than a power flush. You can drain and re-fill more often cause you are only replacing 40% of the fluid.

I agree that newer fluid will do much better job than the dirty fluid. But newer fluid will have more additive that can dissolve the varnish on the cluthch plates which might be the only things that prevent the trans from slipping.

Hasn't affected mine at all.But there was very little clutch material in the pan.about pea sized when I wiped it out.And I might add after about 5 drain and refills its more like 90 % of the fluid.I kept going with a short drive between each drain , and putting it through all gears while running with the brake on in the driveway,Until what drained out looked just like what I was putting in.

Replaced Gasket and Filter as well as cleaned the pan after the first drain.

Never over fill the J30's transmission. It can cook it.

AgreedI made sure I put in the exact amount that drained out.

Two identical Tupperware containers made that task easy.

I am running Mobil 1 and drain the transmission pan and replace the exact amount every other oil change. I replace the transmission filter annually.

The transmission was power flushed. Meaning he hooked it up to the cooler line and turned the car on. Thus the transmission pumped the fluid out on its own. I was overfilled but the machine pumped out all the fluid and refilled it to the proper capacity. Theres another method to flush the transmission. i forget but its bad. You should make sure they are hooking it up to the cooler line where the transmission can pump the fluid out on its own and not where ever else they do it in which it forces the transmission to do so.

I havent changed my filter yet but its on my to do list. I just gotta get this inhibitor switch now and im good to go.
