I've been searching around on here about transmission fluids, and getting all this debate on gl-4/gl-5 stuff. Anyways, on this stupid island I live on, no one sells redline fluid (that I know of) and there is nothing that is "MT-90" or gl-4. Everything that I find is mostly valvoline 75w-90 gl-5 stuff. It says the same thing on the bottle that it says on their site:

"* All hypoid differentials (conventional and limited slip) and manual transmissions in passenger cars, light trucks, sport utility vehicles, vans and heavy-duty trucks where an API-GL5 or MT-1 fluid is specified. * High speed, high torque and high horsepower conditions."

The hypoid differential part and API GL-5 specification scares me from using the stuff, or am I wrong?

Now, is this gonna be ok for me or are my synchros gonna go out like everyone says? What are my options for transmission fluid, is there anything else that I can look out for on gear oils? Someone guide me in the right direction for some safe gear oil please

Do not use GL-5. Don't ask me how I know, I though tlong ago that it wouldn't matter but it does and I found out the hard way.

A good auto shop will have redline, heck, go to their web site and they'll list where is the nearest place to you.

Normally API GL5 gear oils have additives such as sulfur, phosphorous, which are there for extreme pressure function applications such as hypoid gears in rear differentials where there are higher gear pressures. However at high temperatures, they corrode and cause premature wear of synchros in trannys, thus shortening their life.

that is the problem, redline lists NO dealers in my area. I went pretty much EVERYWHERE yesterday on this stupid chase for "gl-4" fluid, but it doesn't exist. Everywhere only carries GL-5 stuff. what am I supposed to do?

I really need something to put in my transmission by this friday, what the hell are my options now? Go to nissan dealership?

I'd rather not order oil online, as im sure they cant ship it by airplane and i dont want to wait 2 months for it to get here on boat. is there really no option to buy something else OTHER than redline mt-90? NOTHING GL-5 can be used?

srry, didn't read the part about you being in Hawaii

well the problem is the gl-5 stuff destroys the brass syncros.... so you really don't want to put that in your car.

everyone i know prefers how the redline feels, but as 98kouki said GM synchromesh is a decent substitute. If i remember correctly it's the shockproof syncromesh they use for corvette trannys.

maybe they use it for the ZF lt1, TPI trannies, later ls1 vettes use a T-56 transmission which takes Dexron III auto transmission fluid.

the NV3500 in S-10's and some cavalier's use the synchromesh fluid...

Don't use Synchmesh gear oil in the KA transmission!! It's too thin and it'll screw up the entire transmission.

I thought synchromesh oil was specifically for transmissions with synchros such as the ka trannny...

Ealier posts were correct, you def DO NOT WANT GL-5 in the transmission. Use GL-4 ONLY.

If you can't find Redline locally try looking for Royal Purple. I've used it and its great. Kinda $ though, about $40 to fill the transmission.
