Good point. Any Dextron III or better is OK. Many posts many of us use M1 with 6 oz. of Lube Guard Red. Some use Red Line.

Wise owners install an auxiliary ATF cooler.

technically, there is no longer ANY "Dexron 3" fluid still being sold, as the license to manufacture or market that product all have expired and were not renewed by GM. {GM replaced dex 3 with Dex 6} Many products out there still use similar/same formulation as before, but technically they are not a licensed approved by GM formula anymore

So whats the technical name of the Mobil 1 type fluid that i should be looking for? Will it say dex III or will it say dex 6 or what? Is it just called mobil 1 atf?

Mobil 1 ATF. Dexron III is an ATF which conforms to a now superseded standard, as noted. Most ATF will list it and other standards on the lable. No worries with M1 ATF.

B&M ATF coolers are 70268 or 70264 depending on where you mount it on the car.

No, the M1 atf actually states Mercon V on the label. It is a multi vehicle atf.

What about the filters on the transmission of the 1997? Is there 2 of them? A mesh screen inside and a paper one outside? Any info would be appreciated. thanks

Both filters fit depending on mounting position.

There is no external filter on FGY33, but one can be added.

Won't substitute for Nissan J-matic (I think the current fluid is called.)

It will substitute. That's the only synthetic M1 product that is out now...the mercon v. My next go around, I'm using SuperTech Dex-VI.

According to Nissan? I didn't think there was any ATF yet that met their proprietary standards.

I'm sorry. I was thinking of the old D-Matic that our Q uses. No, I haven't heard of any substitute for J-Matic yet.

So the m1 atf mercon v won't work? So what do i need for the 97 Q?

Yes, it will work. That's what I have in mine right now. The 97-01 Q's required Nissan D-Matic from the factory. The newer cars are using the J-Matic fluid that doesn't have a substitute that I know of. The next go round, I'm going to use Dex-VI because it's better than the Dex-III product plus it has more synthetic oil in it. The price can't be beat either.

I am not so sure a generic average priced Dex 6 is better, or contains "more synthetic" than a premium dex 3 based atf {M1,redline,Amsway,etc}

It will work fine and even better with about 6 oz. of Lube Guard Red and an external ATF cooler. The RE4R03A is a well known item as evidenced in the previous posts.

Hi if I want to change all the transmission fluid (including converter) without flushing, can I use the same technique specify for a G35:

1. Disconnect the ATF hose from the radiator cooler’s return side (driver’s side) and plug the hose. 2. Temporary connect a piece of 3/8” tubing to the radiator fitting and route it to a drain pan that allows you to visually monitor the ATF’s flow rate and color while adding ATF. Secure the tubing so it can’t whip out of the drain pan, otherwise things will get real messy.3. Have the additional quarts of Nissan Matic J ATF (M1 ATF for Q45) ready for use. Be ready to move quickly! 4. Start the engine and with it idling pour in new fluid, while monitoring the flow rate and color of the fluid being pumped into the drain pan. When the color is about the same as the color of new fluid, the replacement is complete.5. Shutoff the engine.6. Replace the ATF return hose.7. With the car on level ground, restart the engine and cycle the transmission from Drive to Reverse a few times.8. Run engine at idle speed for 5 minutes. 9. Check the ATF level and add additional fluid if necessary.10. Replace the cap/dipstick assembly and 10mm hold down bolt. Torque to specs.

Any hint on which hose is the return line?

Where is best place to buy transmission fluid for lowest cost?

Thanks007

You can't if you are asking about a mechanical ATF exchange. A chemical flushing agent is something quite different. But you are welcome to burn up your planetary gears if saving $100 is so important.

For me, O'Reilly was about $2.50 per quart cheaper than Poop Boys.

Walmart had some Castrol Imported Car ATF for $4.50/qt. The Nissan approved oil was listed on the back.

Note the cost of a yearly drain and fill or flush with synthetic trans oil as typical auto holds 8-12 qts oil. Ouch. I still use Chevron ATF with cooler, 2nd filter and lube guard. Haven't had the car long so whether or not the extreme price increase in using M1 fluid increases longevity sufficiently to justify use I wouldn't know. For some reason I doubt it. A good Texas dino ATF with the LG should be enough. I even stopped using synthetic in the crank case. Good dino is abundant.

All ATF is synthetic. It is really more a question of molecular structure and consistencey of that structure and additives.

Well, kinda, not really....the ADDITIVE PACKAGE portion of the ATF may be synthetic.....but the BASE OIL {which makes up the bulk of the finished ATF product can be petroleum{dino}based, semi synthetic{hydrocracked group 3 based oil} or true synthetic group 4{PAO} or group 5 {polyolester}

My vote always goes to a true full synthetic fluid, whether motor oil, ATF, or gear oil. Purchased wisely, the best group 5 ester based products can be on your doorstep for under $8 per quart delivered. Must plan ahead and stock up during sales if one wants to run boutique synthetics at Walmart prices.

LevelTen urges owners of their Nissan transmissions to use Nissan Matic-S fluid. I believe the S is for synthetic. It is kind of pricey..
