Hi,

I am wondering if all the transmission fluid that claims it is compatible with GL-4 and GL-5 applications is safe to use in my 5speed 1990 transmission. About 2 years ago I swapped out my auto for the 5speed, but hadn't read up much on what type of fluid to use. I just threw in some GL-4- GL-5 compatible stuff and hoped for the best, but now my transmission is leaking a bit and I want to change the fluid to the right kind. I know it calls for GL-4 but I can't seem to find any GL-4 fluid, only the compatible stuff. I've been a few different parts stores in the area and no one carries just GL-4.

buy some Nissan MTF. I love it. Shifts smooth like butter now after switching from the multi-compatible stuff.

I contacted my local Nissan dealership, but all they sell is the compatible stuff too! Maybe you guys south of the border have better access to this stuff?

i had advance auto parts buy me a case of redline MT-90 to have it shipped to their store & they'll call me to pick it up ~ that was before the internet boom; you can order stuff from an eBay seller or Amazon seller for the same GL-4 only oil

if you can't wait, local speed shops should have some

GL-4 is obsolete. That is why you are having trouble finding it. GL-5 is the new standard and it backwardly compatible.

Ok, But I've heard on this forum that GL-5 can cause damage to the synchros in a 240sx due to its higher ratio of friction causing additives. Is this nothing to worry about?

Personally, I would stick with whatever Nissan recommends, and they recommend GL-4. That's just my view on it. check out www.thenismoshop.com. They sell the Nissan MTF.

unless that other poster can post links saying GL-5 is safe for transmissions requiring GL-4 only, don't believe him

buy it online & have it shipped or goto local speed shops/ parts counter people & have them special order it for you

the closest i can find about GL-5 is if it carries the MT-1 rating as well...

may be backwards compatible to GL-4, but at a certain temp
