I am going to do a simple fluid change on my 2002 4wd Pathfinder transmission -- not taking off the pan - just removing the drain plug and refilling. The Nissan Reference chart shows it taking 9 quarts for this -- is that correct? I do not remember using that much fluid ........ but it was a long time ago .......... for some reason I do not have it in my notes. Anybody do this recently? I may do the transfer case at the same time since it uses the same fluid.

It is about 3.5 quarts on my 2WD. Pan drop about 5.5.

Quick drain and replace 4 liters, total drain, force feed out would be about that. But if you do this quick drain every other year it will do, since over a few years all is replaced, but how do you drive?

If you beat your hydraulics do a total drain, if you use common sense, no towing a quick drain should do.

But eventually the filter screen should be checked, drop the Dexron into a pan, then inspect, if a lot of dark particles I would do a total drain, the every other year a quick drain but at least inspect what comes out.

It's funny ...........my local mechanics system says a simple drop is 9 quarts also ----- maybe they copied Nissans mistake ........ the manual list the change for the other fluids correctly.

Anyway, I got a case of Nissan D matic fluid for $70.00. So I am going to do both differentials (may use M1- not sure) -- the transmission and the transfer case ............ new belts, plugs and air filter.

So I should be good to go

I had my fluids changed yesterday on my 02 PAth w/125k+ The transmission took a about 4.5 qts and the transfer case used about 1.5 qt. I used the factory D Matic. I bought a case of the fluid - so I will most likely do another change on the transmission at the next oil change -- since I have 6 quarts remaining.

All the old fluid looked surprisingly good - Especially the front differential (as expected) both changed at 60k.

Front and rear differentials used a little less than 5 quarts of gear oil - I was able to get Mobil 1 75w - 90 (it's within specification) for $6.99 so I went with that.

Ditto on the quick drain volume...about 4.5 or a tad more in my case but under 5qts...I also had purchased 9 qts thinking it was going to be a lot more...I'm just saving the rest waiting for another drain and fill.
