So my best friend just picked up an 07 Versa sedan SL with CVT with ABS, on friday. Late Sat. night he called me to tell me his car was having problems. I come to check it out. Apparently he had to stop quickly. When he did, he said the car started jerking the last few feet and the engine died out. When he went to restart it, it started, but as soon as he put it in Drive or Reverse the engine dies. He had to have it towed in. Today he talked to the service dept. and they said they have to replace the trans. They don't know what's wrong with it, but they said it's shot. The car only has 136 miles on it!!!! I feel so bad because I recommended the car to my friend. What could cause this? Also should he try to get the dealer to give him another new car. i know i'd hate to have a car with the trans replaced at 136 miles. What do you guys think? What are the rules with IL lemon laws? I know it's like 3 times for the same thing, but isn't there also part of it about being out of service for a certain number of days?

On CVT equipped models, there have been complaints that the transmission will "slip" for a while after a panic stop. What your friend is experiencing is probably an extreme version of this. Perhaps before replacing the transmission, the dealership should try resetting all of the computers in the car and trying again. If something IS actually broken inside the CVT, it won't fix anything. If it's the problem we have been seeing, it should start right up and go.

thanks, i will mention this to him. I feel so sorry for him. He was so proud of his new car. He said he still loves it despite this initial problem.

Back in 2002 the transmission failed on my new 2001 Acura CL-S so even the luxury cars can have transmission problems. Although quite a few other transmissions were bad on that model, Acura never issued a recall or even stated what the problem was. Ultimately they extended the trany warranty to 100k for all owners. Likewise, I'd be surprised if Nissan does anything more than just replace the transmission under the new car warranty.

This is not a common problem, it sounds like an internal transmission failure due to a severe manufacturing defect. If the transmission was "slipping," the engine would not be stalling. I would fight for another new car, since this is a major repair on a car that is only 136 miles old!

Be glad you don't own a Mazda... the 94-02 626es are NOTORIOUS for transmission failures! Ford/Mazda never issued any recalls, and never fixed the design flaw. When the transmissions are new, they slam into second and third, and will practically launch you through the windshield while downshifting; This is what a good transmission feels like! They usually fail every 30k, and require fluid changes every 10k.

This happnd to me a few times.plus no ABS doesn't help.It seems to go away after you speed up to around 40mph ish speed.

I had to panic brake a few days ago, had no issures getting back up and going. I did notice that my overdrive went off, however I turn off overdrive to lightly brake on the highway, I may have done it out of habit.

I have a theory.... IF the tires are locked up during a panic stop and if the CVT is too slow to disengage the transmission (equivalent to unlocking the torque converter), the engine would stall, and the hydralic pump that operates the CVT would lose power since it's probably directly driven, not electric. I wonder if the CVT gets stuck in the last selected ratio and get a major computer fault. The fault is "reset" after traveling at a continous speed.

I remember when I was a teenager driving my manual transmission '91 Toyota Tercel in the snow, I was traveling at 30mph and was goofing off and hit the brakes, locking u phte front wheels without depressing the clutch pedal. All the the idiot lights came on my dash and the engien went quiet. when I released the brake, the engine immediately restarted after I pushed on the gas and drove normally.
