There is a 94 active with 80k on it. Not sure if I will seriously consider it, but....

What does a trans rebuild cost on average. That is, goes to shop, they take it out, rebuild it and put it back in?

How about, I take it out, get to where ever is recommended in So. Cal. for a good rebuild?

Thanks for the help.

Bruce

If by rebuild you mean reman trans from Joe, then its gonna be about $2500 installed. It comes to about 2000 from Joe and then factor in $500 for install, fluid and other "this and thats"...

Dont "rebuild" your trans... Get a reman from joe!

I see auto trans on eBay all the time for $200.00. Why spend $2000 on a rebuild?

Anyone that's been through a transmission replacement will tell you after buying an ebay or junkyard take out for $200 (usually more) plusshipping it $200 (not counting pallet-ing charges)pluspaying to have someone install it $450 (or more)

That the idea of getting away with less than $1000 is tempting, but it's a crap shoot. If you have to "try again" or do it again in a year or so, you would have been better off going with a OEM re-man that will last 100k if treated properly (fluid changes and external filter).

I agree, wrecking yards are a risk, but a local yard will save you a ton of $$ in freight and palleting charges.

Or, you can buy from a trusted member here on the forum. Guys like AZhitman & PopPop are not going to ruin their good name for a couple hundred $$ on a transmission.

Right now I have a "known to me to be in excellent condition" transmission that I pulled out of a car I was driving until some butt head on a cell phone .... - never mind.

Anyway, I am saving it until the day I may need it. My point is that you can find a working transmission from a trusted source and save paying the full cost of a new rebuild.

But some people aren't comfortable going with a used transmission. My advice is do what you have to do to be comfortable with your decision. The Q is an incrediable car to drive and you should enjoy every minute of it!
