hey guys! i just got myself a 1994 pathfinder! ill post pics when i get some, but its a blue 4x4 with probably 180k... runs real nice though.

i want to do some work on it as soon as i get it to get this badboy into top shape.... aside from the standard shocks/brakes, i was thinking i should install an aftermarket transmission cooler, since ive heard the stock ones are notorious for clogging up and damaging the transmission.

I know i saw a DIY somewhere, i think it was here, but i couldnt find it by searching or in the sticked threads... anyone know where i could find that?

on a related note, does anyone know if there is some sort of thermostat for the transmission cooler, IE oil flows to the cooler when the transmission is hot and it doesnt when cold? or not? because if it has a thermostat, i was thinking that bigger is better, but without a thermostat, it might get too cool when driving in the snow.

thanks!

I am not quite sure on the configuration on the wd21, but i know the r50's have the transmission cooler lines running though the radiator. All you have to do is disconnect those lines and connect them to your aftermarket trans cooler. Usually you will need to buy longer transmission cooler lines, but make sure that the new lines will be able to withstand the high temperatures and pressures of the cooler lines.

After I purchased a rebuild transmission, a 14,500gvw transmission cooler was recommended (it sounds over kill, but it works and it only costs ~$30 on ebay). The installation is really simple, most kits come with “zip tie” style supports that attach to your existing ac condenser or radiator. I was told to use the aftermarket transmission cooler exclusively and totally forget about the stock cooler. This is because the stock cooler can completely plug up and the whole cooling system will be useless. After installation make you check the ATF level and check for leaks.

As far as the thermostat, as far as I know, I do not believe there is a thermostat in the transmission. It doesn’t hurt to run cold fluid through your trans since it generates a tremendous amount of heat.
