I just took my 240SX 91 5 speed in the Performance shop this past weekend. Weather to cold and wet and I really don`t feel like throughing my back out. I am having a new Spec II clutch put in. Not bad price 329.00 spec II Clutch kit, 240.00 labor and 60 to have the flywheel resurfaced. They called me after inspection and told me the universal joints are bad. I all ready knew that but they said they could not replace it being it is a 2 part drive shaft. So they had to send it off to have it balance and possible replace the joints. Then he said there is another problem with the transmission a lot of material came out when they drained the transmission fluid. That would go with the fact that the transmission would pop out of gear. Now I need to find a transmission. I got a quote of 150 for a junk yard transmission with 6 month warranty. I tried calling around about rebuilding the one in my car and got quotes of 1200 to 2000 bucks. I was told that rebuilding a manual was more labor intensive than an automatic. Crap 1 bad drive shaft, 1 clutch kit and now 1 manual transmission. I am not complaining about the shop that is working on my car but does 1200 to 2000 sound right on a rebuilt manual transmission? Has anybody had one rebuilt or bought one of the internet? I was hoping to come out of this with out bleeding to much. I also have to get some struts and springs the idiot who had the car before me heated the springs so to lower the car and now the springs are rubbing the struts.

I was told that 91 through 93 would work. Thanks for the offer. To bad there is nobody that has a rebuilt one that is no longer needed.

Well they called me about the drive shaft it appears that the other shop fixed it but they could not test it out since it would not fit in there machine. I guess being a 2 piece shaft they couldn`t do it. Makes me wonder if I shouldn`t look for a one piece drive shaft? Anybody go that route?

transmission rebuilds are expensive because most people just buy used transmissions. Anyone building a transmission is using brand new parts, and more than likely has the experience to do a great job. If you find the right shop, you can probably get your own custom gear ratios put in there for about the cost of a normal rebuild.

If you're not looking to spend a bunch of cash, find a used transmission. Junkyards are full of 240s.

Another phone call from the speed shop. Now they say my transmission mount is broke. Crap another part broken. They couldnt find one locally so I had to go the Auto Zone route. I am wondering if I will ever get this car fixed!:(

$1,300 sounds really expensive for a rebuild. I got my Mustang T5 transmission rebuilt for $500, but it didn't need new syncros.

mustang trannies are more common to needin a rebuild. they blow 3rd gear all the time, so the parts are more available. i say get a used trans. if you cant find the 91-93, get an older one. i dont know of any difference, if there is one its in the bellhousing which you can switch. if not, just do as stated earlier and get a sr20. oh, and for the trans mount, they go for about 90 bucks. if you are willing to customize, a $13 gm poly mount can be bought from autozone, and made to work.

Ok got my car back tonight :) Wow it has been a long week and a half. Wow as long as I have own the car I have never known what it is like to drive the car that the clutch was working properly. Here is what had to be done

1. Replace transmission with junk yard transmission (works great!)

2. Replace Clutch Spec II kit

3. Replace transmission mount

4. Repair drive shaft

5. Redline transmission oil

6. waiting 500 miles before running it hard

Car really seems to drive a whole lot better. Out of pocket expenses aproximently 1,000.00. Talked to the mechanic at the shop and he told me about somebody was getting a SR engine installed for 1,500 labor and 2800.00 front clip. I am thinking of keeping the current engine for this year and fixing everything else up. Replacing struts and springs because some idiot before me heated the springs up and now it is rubbing the struts and redoing the interior. Then getting an SR. I can`t wait!!
