I recently acquired another y33 that has about 75k. I know for a fact this transmission has never been drained. There has been much discussion on the changing of filters and whatnot. When I drain, should I drop the pan and change the filter, and if so, should I drop it and change the filter again after about a week like some have recommended? Also, whats the expected life cycle for amsoil fluid on this?

drop pan and change filter if it has never been done and you are not sure of history, inspect old filter-it should be clean unless you have transmission problems- refill with new fluid and then go get fluid exchanged by machine.Following this,I would exchange the fluid annually, either 6 drain/fills to remove aprox. 85% of the fluid,or by machine to remove aprox 90-95% of the fluid-either is acceptable if done at this frequency.

Get the parts from Joe and an ATF cooler from Summit.

Do a pandrop, replace the filter and gasket, inspect and clean the pan, replace the one time use bolts with new ones.

Mount and plumb the ATF auxiliary cooler bypassing the radiator.

Mechanically exchange the fluid.

Presuming presnet fluid is pink and not burnt. If it is not in good conditon, a double exchange may be in order.

does the 97-01q use an external canister filter similar to the g50? if so,replace that also as it filters much finer than the internal screen.

Nope - The only factory-installed filter is the one inside the transmission sump.
