Yesterday I noticed a strange whining noise come from the car. I had just picked it up from the parking lot to go home. I live about a mile away from the train station. Noise continued, i got home just fine, didnt think much of it. Today same story, went home for 10 minutes then I went out to go to the gym. I noticed the gears werent changing though the car was reving up without a problem. Somehow I made it to the gym, and the transmission died right on the parking lot. Had to push it into a spot. My buddy at the gym told me he'd follow me home so we got back out, got in the car and it shifted in reverse. Got out of the parking lot and it died at the first light, maybe 400 feet away. Pushed it into a nearby parking lot, waited a few minutes and got in again. It drove for a little bit and it died again.

Been reading through the boards, hoping its just a sensor issue but then again i'm not sure. gonna try to tow the car to my house so I can run the diagnostics. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your description is a clogged filter, service that and keep your fingers crossed because if it aint the filter its very bad news.

Thanks for the tow tip. Will make sure of it.

The sound looks like it's coming from the inside of the car, middle if you will. I guess thats where the transmission sits. Will check it out when I get it back home, in about an hour. Other than that I don't really have anything more to add... don't know anything about trannys. I can do basic stuff, oil, breaks, spark plugs and I've changed the window motors a bunch of times. Anything deeper is beyond my knowledge. What kind of info are you looking for? Maybe any tips on what to look for would be helpful.

A little clarification... when I said it died on the first post it wasn't the engine that died, it was the transmission. It wouldn't shift. The engine was running, reving up and down without a problem. I took it as high as 5000 RPM, the car still wouldn't move. I tried first second third gear, still the car wouldn't move. I can move the shifter just fine. It didn't move in reverse either. Got the car in, will try the transmission diagnostics to see if it throws any codes.

Picture tells a thousand words... here's a youtube link of the self diagnostics flashes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQUG-CuP1Jc

That long blink at first kinda throws me off... not sure if that's the first flash or the separator between sequences. the movie starts with that flash, I filmed the entire sequence 3 times.
But if indeed the first one is just a separator, number 10 is the long flash which would indicate the turbine revolution sensor.

According to this very very long thread, 94-240-conv-with-at-shift-problems-t96505.html though it's for a 240SX, the revolution sensor can be disconnected and the speed sensor will provide the necessary info for the transmission to shift. Not sure if the J is wired the same way or if it'll work. The symptoms though are about the same.

The 240 and J have very different transmissions. Rev sensor failure is common age related issue on this car, but it doesn't emit a noise. Have you pulled any codes from the ECU?

"nobody"

Reverse is not computer/sensor/actuator controlled, coupled with your noise(front trans pump starving for fluid?) and the fact it works after sitting(filter back flushes a little) I would replace the trans filter, its cheap, easy, and very possibly your issue.
