Transfer case shifting

ya i just got thiss 2000 pathfinder and it grinds really bad going into 4 lo. And it just generally is very hard to shift the transfer case to any of the gears. Is this a bad part maybe needs fluid what is with this T case. The driving of the 4wd seems normal

Change the fluid, use any synthetic ATF. Inspect the old fluid for excessive metal or other debris.
