I have some play on my 4x4 transfer case output shaft, where the rear drive shaft attaches. It seems like the play is on the output shaft itself. What would be the cause of this? My guess is a bad bearing on the output shaft. How hard is that bearing to pull?

i don't know a lot about the 4wd transfer cases.... but it sounds to me like the carrier bearing... don't take my word for it tho

it is not an impossible thing to change.... but depending on your level of knowledge it can suck

If the transfer case is built like a manual transmission, then I should be able to open it up and remove the bearing...after battling it for hours. This truck doesnt have a carrier bearing as far as I can see.

Does anyone have an exploded view of the transfer case?

Kick a** captainzeros. You guys think these bearings are common, as in found at NAPA as generics?

looks like www.rockauto.com has them. Reviews for rockauto are a mixed bag, I've had nothing but awesome luck with them, some people think they're satan.

If you do buy from rockauto, google up a coupon code, they have ongoing customer loyalty coupon codes for 5% off that they suggest sharing with your friends.... the internet is my friend, right?

Ive had mixed luck with rockauto. If you ever have a return or an RMA, its hell to try to find where to send it or how to get credited for it, mostly because their customer service is in the Phillipines......ask me how I know this!

The moral of the story is make absolutely certain the part you order is absolutely correct, that being said, there are several different bearings for the same output shaft on this transfer case on the rockauto site. Ill bet that because its an old truck, NAPA can cross reference the bearings to something generic in their local warehouse.

Basically, Ill need to pull the bearings and look for the ink stamps. As far as those weird needle bearings, who knows where Ill find those.

Yo captain, have you ever been inside one of these transfer cases?

I thought because there was a big greasy thumbprint on the page that youd been doing some work 'on that page'.

Off to change my ball joints this morning!
