So I haven't used my Auto or 4Hi in a while and I'm in belief that I should engage it every-once and a while to get the fluids moving. I went to do this last night and there was a noise coming from under the center of the truck while I was putting it into 4Hi, I turned the dial back to AUTO and the noise was still there. I tried again putting the dial to AUTO first, no sound, then to 4HI....NOISE again! it's like a light grind? like something is trying to engage but can't. I tried to put it into 4LO just to see what happened, so shift into neutral, at a stand still shift to 4LO, the noise and the 4LO light blinks beside the 4 wheel indicator...WTF?

The last time I used the system was back in June...In a field with long grass and mud trails. I felt a CLUNK when I engaged it there, didn't really think anything of it. Maybe this was another sign that I missed? :gotme

I'm going to try something Pwnin posted here post5397900.html#p5397900 and see if I can get any out of that.

Does anyone else have any other info, Fueler, looking in your direction on this one, seems your the one with the most T-case experience

Thanks and I'll post later with updates...not knowing sucks!

later.

Ok, So...the system shifts into all modes available, BUT that noise is still there, even while driving. I tried to run the diagnostics that Pwnin posted. but as soon as I started the sequence everything worked fine, just still had the noise. maybe I will try and take a soundbite and upload it later and let you all hear it.

Drop the fluid from the transfer case and closely inspect that fluid for ant particles, look for metals, bits of chain, bearings, feel for grit in the bottom of the collected container. Re-fill the T case, drop that oil and again search the dropped oil for particles, then re-fill the case

Also before you do this, open up the fill plug FIRST, just to make sure its not seized, and so you'll be able to fill it up with fluid after you drain it. A bottle pump is gonna be useful for this too.

I was always under the impression that the fluids in your diffs/T-case are always dealing with moving parts still despite being in 2WD, is this true???

Yeahh, if the vehicle is moving, the fluid will be moving too. In 2WD, just the front driveshaft isnt engaged.

Yeah, the main propeller shaft drives the lubrication system in the transfer case, i know this because before i installed my warn hubs, a couple members here confirmed that even if the front wheels are disengaged, the transfer case is lubricated by the motion of the rear wheels
