I have never had the transfer case or rear diff gear oil changed. The dealership does not really push it as they push changing most other fluids. I have no problems with the car other then totally warped rotors. The question I have is it to late to cange the gear oil at this point. As I never changes it in 106,000 miles could draining it cause something to leak . I have always heard that some times dirty fluid in old trannys may be what is holding it together. I dont know if this appiies to transfer cases and differentials.
nope, you can change the gear oil in the transfer-case and rear differential at any time. they dont have clutch-packs like transmissions do - so removing old fluid, and adding fresh new fluid will not cause them to slip. and 106,000 miles is still very young for a Japanese car.
my suggestion is to change the transfer-case & differential every 30,000miles. if your gentle you can easily go 50-60k and do the changes. you want to remove the metal shavings inside, and clean the magnet on the drain plug. its gonna be filthy at this point. mine was changed at 30k-sih, and was filled.
if you would like to see how its done, here you go: (i did the work myself, and have pics to show)
