Hello all,
I recently purchased a 1996 Pathfinder, 5 speed, 4x4. I have noticed there's a small leak under the vehicle under the center left, about under the drivers seat. I believe the leak is coming from the drain plug for the transfer case. I know that the previous owner recently had this serviced. Before replacing the plug, I need to drive about 400KM...

Will this increase the speed of the leak? Does the transfer case pressurize while the motor is running?

I was told that Redline Dexron IV fluid was used. Would that be the pink color for the fluid?

Thanks for all your help, this is a great site!

Dexron IV does not exist, you are thinking of Dexron VI. Dex VI is a suitable substitute, and it should be reddish in color, yes.

You can try replacing the drain plug. Provide your VIN and I can give you an exact part number.

Thanks for the help. Do you know if the transfer case pressurizes? I would like to replace it in about 400KM...

No, there is no pump in the transfer case to pressurize the fluid, and it has a breather tube to equalize pressure between it and the atmosphere.

I'd suggest Nissan Matic D as the replacement for the fluid, and change it every 30k (less if there is the possibility of water entry such as off-roading). You'll need 2.32 quarts of fluid.

The drain and fill plugs are 13mm plugs, so a 1/2" (12.7mm) drive tool may not work sufficiently. You may wish to purchase this drain plug socket set from Harbor Freight (be sure to use a 20% off coupon) to ease removal. Always remove the fill plug first.

Good luck!
