I just changed over my tires and figured I would deal with transfer case and rear diff fluid change while I was at it. I loosened the fill plug on the transfer case to ensure it would come out, however when I removed it gear oil came pouring out. I would say about 200 - 300ml. I was not expecting that so there was no bucket underneath. Is this normal? Not sure how it could have been filled past the fill plug. I had it changed at dealership 45,000km ago so it is not like it was factory filled. It is for a 2016 Nissan Rogue AWD SV.

If the car was level then they definitely overfilled it, the oil should only be at the level of the fill plug. The fill plug is aft on the case, so if you had the front jacked then that would explain the appearance of an overfill.

Ok, I did have the car jacked up on that one side as it is easier to access the fill hole.

Rear diff is about a half a quart.
Transfercase is .6 of a pint.

Because of the gear ratio, and how little fluid these take,
you should change it every 20,000 miles. I used M1
75W90 and it was much better, and it lasted longer.
Calls for 80W90, 75W90 will make no difference, full
synthetic.

Do not need LSD additive, it is not limited slip.

Just my opinion.... I change the transmission fluid every 30K, and the diff/transfer case every 60K.

If you do the transmission at the same time as the trans/diff, then it's easier to cycle them at a 2:1 ratio.
In other words... you are changing the diff and transfer case now. do the transmission.
Then in 30K miles, do the transmission.
then at the next 30K, do transmission, transfer, diff.

Or to make it easier.

Do it all at the same time.

Fluid is cheap enough preventive investment.

The diff is so damn easy to do that it’s not even funny. Seriously if I was bored, I’ll do that one every oil change. :bowrofl:

There is so much less gear oil in the transfer case, 60K is not good.
You do realize the gear ratio is 5.173, at least on newer models,
right? My Mustang is 3.31, my Camaro was 3.27, my Charger was
swaped to 3.64. So, you realize how fast the ring and pinion gear
are moving at 5.173, and the diff in the transmission, which is
lubricated by THIN transmission fluid.

AWD mode or not, the gears in the transfer case are spinning.
AWD mode or not, the gears in the rear diff are spinning.

Even if you removed the driveshaft for summer, those gears are
still spinning.

You all can do what you want, of course, it is your cars, but there is
only just over a half a pint in the transfer case, that's not a lot
at all, and a half a quart in the rear diff. Nissan calls for
conventional 80W90, that's even worse. Using 75W90 will at
least last to 60,000 miles, but the transfer case drain will be
twice as dark as the differential at 60,000 miles.

Since ONE QUART of M1 75W90 will more than cover the diff
and Xfer case, with some to spare. $14 every 30K isn't
bad at all, except for me, because I do that in 25 weeks.

Take it as you will, it's cheap enough to do every 30k.

For a car you plan to keep, more is better. Can't argue with that.

2013 Jetta TDI - 243,000 miles, front end damage 4 times, +3 deer hits - BOUGHT BACK BY VW.
2013 Jetta S - 86,000 miles - 1st deer hit TOTALED.
2006 Chevy HHR - 161,000 miles - Front end damage, SOLD.
2015 Jetta TSI - 179,000 miles - 2 deer hits, 3rd TOTALED.

Nope...

Cool thing was, since I work in a shop, I did the repairs myself.
The adjuster came out calculated the damages and they sent a
check. I bought all the parts, and did it myself. So, a $4200 check?
Cost me $600 to fix it on my own, so I made BANK dude. I have
rebuilt the front end on Jettas five times. The most it cost me
was $1200, with a $4800 check. After I got like $6000 in the
bank, I bought my Mustang free and clear.

The '13 TDI? The 5th hit, they were going to total it. This was
also when "Diesel-gate" happened, and VW was going to buy
back all the 10-14 Diesel cars, your choice of course. The
adjuster came out, looked at it, looked at the past four times
it was hit, and said that he thinks he's just going to total it out.
I do always get GAP coverage, so there was no issue... However,
I said to the guy, well you can do that, or let VW buy it back. He
asked, what do you mean? I said, well, YOU can pay the $14,000
balance on the car, or let VW take it back and eat the $14k.
According to their own words, as long as the car can be driven back
to the dealer there under its own power, they will buy it back.
I said, all I need, is to make it look presentable, and they will
buy it back. It still ran, but had another $3000 in damages.
So, the dude wrote it up at $2400, I slapped a bumper cover
and upper grille on it, and let VW take it back.

See, VW did say, as long as the car drives in under its own power.
Well, people were gutting the interiors, taking the stereos out, and
all kinds of crap. And yes, they took the cars back, they were being
crushed anyway, after removing any parts they could resell or use
as collision repair. I was told, since that happened, I cannot bring
it in with the front end missing. I wanted the speakers, and the
agent told me, just put something in there to replace them with,
and you can take the speakers; they were the Fender system and
the sound system was phenomenal. The ONLY CAR I ever bought
where I did not modify or do anything with the stereo system.
I did take the subwoofer, road side kit, and ER kit, and wheels.
I drove it in on 4-spare wheels, no wiper blades, and no bulbs
what-so-ever. I followed the progress of the car, in CarFax, and
it was indeed crushed.
