I have a 1996 240sx that has already had a 5 speed transmission swapped into it. I am wondering if there is any way to use original ECU. My goal is to not have any trouble codes so I can pass the smog inspection.

thanks in advance

Are you talking about the auto or manual ecu? Auto I'm assuming?

And btw, I would try the 240sxtech section. You might get some more reliable answers there.

auto ecu works fine with a 5spd swap. you shouldnt have any problems, and it should cut your speed limiter too

I get a transmission code with my auto ecu (something about prdnt). If its the only code that pops up, you can clear it with an OBD reader and it will stay off for a couple of days or so.

At least thats how mine works. I had it smogged after I cleared it and I passed.

Sorry for not being specific the car was originally automatic and has been swapped to manual with the tcm disconnected check engine light still on with a tcm no communication code. I want to know if there is any way around it. But I will try the other forum.

he told u above. Use an obd reader, and clear it for the day. It will stay off for a while, then most likely come back.

what year is the transmission from?

my trans doesn't have the crank position angle sensor or w/e and it's throwing a CEL. i thought 95's didn't need it but i guess it does. i also swapped to manual ECU and still has CEL. but no more rough start and everything is fine.

Dang I am in Cali too, just moved here from GA (no emissions testing), and had a 5 speed swap done on my '98, got an ECU off a 5-speed '97 but there are still codes being thrown, the "prdnt" one, the "knock sensor", and the "CAS" crank angle sensor. If I recall correctly the guy that did the swap sourced the transmission from a '95, so I'm guessing that is where the CAS code is coming from, I bought a new knock sensor and gave it to my mechanic to see if the code will go away. He is supposed to get back to me and give me an estimate to see how much it would cost to get it to pass SMOG. I am praying he gives me some good news.... Anyone on here do a 5 speed swap on an OBDII S14 and have absolutely no codes or problems?

honestly,

your best bet is to undo 6 little bolts, then take out the cluster, and remove the CEL bulb. after you pass smog put it back in or leave it out whatever you wish.

if you take the check engine light out you will fail smog.

during startup the light comes on to show that its working and is still there... the inspector will look for it to come on during key on

Regardless, 96 and up are obd2. So they are plugged in to the computer, and wouldn't pass...With the light pulled out or not. I am doing this swap this weekend, someone chime in on a 5 speed swap. Btw, the 95 has a CAS.

Ok, so it is only OBD1 transmissions from S13's that don't have a CAS? I guess I will need to see about replacing that sensor then.

Yes sir, 95 and up have them on the top of the bellhousing. But good luck getting to it on a 95, unless you take off the egr tube.

I am about to finish my swap hopefully wed, and could try and answer that then. One problem I ran into was the trans harness. The plug into the engine fuse box is diff, anyone run into this? I'm using the 5 speed harness, on a previously auto car. And the top plug has 3 wires on the 5 speed harness, but the fuse box plug is only 2 prong/wire. Is this for the clutch interlock switch?
