ok heres what happened i was driving in the blizzard last week and got cut off by some f!@# in a minivan and spun my car out into the concrete divider... afterwards the car is in "neutral" position on the gearshift (its a 5 spd_) but is actually in first gear at all times... attempts to put the car in any other gear are not possible or result in grinding (the position where 5th should be) does anyone know what might be wrong with the trans, and does anyone know where to find an exploded view or the gearsets inside the trans ntw its a 1990 hatch if that is relevant i figure that the car is still driveable if i fizx this trans problem and replace the starter ( which has seemed to have subsequently burned out as well) thanx all-g-

its not the clutch... the clutch disengages properly... ie to start the car and not stall it as in its always in 1st.... i was thinking one of the shatf thet the gears is on might have slid inside the trans during the impact

Does it drive fine in first gear? When you try to put it into gear, will the stick move into that gear and just not select that gear internally, or can you not even get the stick to move up or down?

If it works fine in 1st, then its probably broken shift linkage, not broken gears or shafts. Any thing wrong, except a broken plastic bushing at the end of the shifter, is gonna require you to remove the tranmission and take the guts out of the casing.

I did the same thing to my old civic but it was stuck in 3rd gear. prongs broke due to a loose bolt (don't know from where) jamed in the gears. Turns out I broke the pronks off the shifing fork. It was really cold and I had just started the car went from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, N, then took off easy out of my subdivision, went from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, then there was like there was no 4th gear, tried to hit fifth and it wasn't there. Then find out its locked in 3rd gear and the shifter is all sloppy. Just my instance, hope this helps. Nick

there is a current thread right now asking whether the transmissions from the E and DE are interchangeable and there is no definate answer but someone said that it looks like they should be interchangeable even though there are some minor differences

well i didnt think you understood that because you were talking about the hp difference and potential of the engines which has nothing to do with the transmissions. the engines themselves are quite different

Several people, including Aries, have stated they are the same.

transmission are the same

But what happened to your current transmission?I have rebuilt 4 KA trannys and NEVER heard of your problem.

IF nothing was hit under the car and everything looks and feels ok, could be that the nylon bushing on the shifter was broken.Even could be the plastic half moon where the shifter rest.I am positive that your problem is shifter related and the transmission is ok as long you dont GRIND IT anymore.Feel fre to email me or post here for any doubts.

the shifter plasstic piece is ok, the mount the shifter ball sits in is ok... i fupped the shifter out after someone said thats all i can basically do w/o dropping the trans from the car... so im guessing that either one or more of the gears broke inside the trans, or theshaft in the trans shifted with out moving the position of the shifter...-g-
