Thanks paul.. Sounds like its a reasonable job, i may try and do it over the course of 2 days.. Fortunately since i have an aftermarket exhaust, i dont have to remove the entire exhaust, just the front part.. once thats off, the driveshaft comes down and then the trans out... I think i may give it a try..3rd Q wrote:Wes,Took the trans out of the parts car with my brother-in-law using jack stands and a floor jack to support the trans. Took about an hour 45 minutes. The two bolts on top are a b*tch to get to. Luckily I already had the plenum off and could get them from on top. You won't have to lift it as high as you're talking about. Just make sure you have good ramps under the wheels or have it supported well. I think Dennis and others have said you could use a super long extension from below. It is still a lot of work- I'd vote for letting a good trans shop do it- but I know you love the challenge and revel in the grease of it all .

I was thinking a drop only of the front was 4 or 4.5 hr. booktime, which means a lift, transmission jack and a helping hand occasionally.Q451990 wrote:I think transmission R&R book time is about six hours...

Well, that makes sense due to the output shaft, but I thought when mine was done for the turbine sensor, they only dropped the front, but I wasn't there to observe.elwesso wrote:in order to get the torque converter out, you need to completely drop the trans!
Like I say, I didn't see it, and you have a lot more experience with transmission removal than I do.elwesso wrote:I dont see how you can drop just the front of the trans, unless they slightly lowered the engine AND trans and left the driveshaft/exhaust hooked up! thats very possible....
in order to lower the trans relative to the engine, you have ot unhook it from the flexplate.
Wes you don't have to drop the trans all the way out the car but, you will have those nasty hard to get to 17mm trans mounts bolts that have 2 bolts to the front bellhousing and the other 2 on the sides of the block! It's easier with the R&P out the way! Listen to me when I tell u to make sure that the TQ is flush before reinstall or u will be saying that the converter is bad! Just spin and push until you here it pop into place when I say flush all the way on the input shaft and don't let the nose of the trans lean too far forward or will pop back out of place.elwesso wrote:I dont see how you can drop just the front of the trans, unless they slightly lowered the engine AND trans and left the driveshaft/exhaust hooked up! thats very possible....
