94-96Q has an internal filter screen that is meant to trap large chunks of a failing transmission from circulating and causing further wear/blockage through system- must remove pan to check/replace it.The external filter is very similar to motor oil filter with a fine particle trapping filter element sealed in a metal can{looks just like a oil filter}, located up behind the radiator near the battery- the replacement kit comes with the filter and hoses, and is a very simple swap- unhook 3 old hoses and plug in new hoses/filter.No need to drain transmission.

What is the current price for the external filter kit these days?

I dont have a diagram of the external filter- and I dont think it is even mentioned in the factory service manual- very, very easy to change, just R&R the 3 hoses- once you look at the kit, it will be self explanatory.

The internal pan mounted screen is best left to a shop with a lift, and it is a messy, dirty job as ATF drips for hours once pan is off.

I would do both filters if neither has ever been done, but the external one is the more important of the two,as it is prone to load up quicker due to its fine particle filtering ability, whereas the internal screen will let all but the largest particles pass right through it, and transmission would have to grenade itself to clog the screen.

Another option I chose is to remove external and replace with a Magnifine that I change yearly when I do my flush. Just my opinion.

The Magnefine is a great option, saves a ton of money also. A little extra plumbing work required to adapt it to the stock 94-96Q dual heat exchangers inputs though, as the mag. only has a single output line{need to add a Y adaptor}
